“What exactly does a respiratory therapist do?”
My grandfather is 70 years old, and he has several breathing issues. He wheezes all the time. Do you think a respiratory therapist can help him? What exactly does a respiratory therapist do?

Audrey Marie Ballard
Respiratory Therapist, Registered
If you have not already, I would recommend that your grandfather see a physician to be properly diagnosed. Wheezing is caused by narrowing of the airways. This can be due to many factors (inflammation, obstruction, etc.) A respiratory therapist (RT) can administered medication that allows the airways to relax; however, it is important to know what's causing the wheezing to know if the medication will be effective.
A RT specializes in pulmonary medicine. RTs have either a 2 or 4 year degree. They are trained practitioners that provide treatment to those suffering from pulmonary disease and other diagnosis that affect the respiratory system.
