Ankle block anesthesia is when the physician injects numbing medicine in specific locations to block all 5 nerves that provide sensation to the ankle and foot.
An ankle block anesthesia is injection of numbing medication like lidocaine around the ankle to numb the nerves supplying sensation to the foot. When correctly done your foot will be numb.

An ankle block involved injecting local anesthetic around the ankle for surgery on the foot (surgery on the toes, like bunionectomy). You cannot have ankle surgery under an ankle block. If the surgery involves the ankle, either the block has to be done much higher (behind the knee or in the groin) or general anesthesia is a better choice.
It's a regional anesthesia. Local anesthetic is injected in the ankle area, blocking the sensation of pain to the foot. At least around 1 to 1.5 hours.
