Neurosurgeon Questions Brain Tumors

What is the best treatment option for a brain tumor?

My friend is 22 years old, and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. What's the best treatment option for a brain tumor, usually? As far as I know, they already did a biopsy on the tumor and it's not cancerous.

This is a difficult question to answer, not really knowing the type of tumor that he has. Non-cancerous still makes it very broad. If by non-cancerous they mean benign, this could be a truly benign tumor such as a meningioma which is very unlikely in a 22 year old. Most likely non-cancerous or being, refers to benign astrocytoma which depending upon extent and location may need surgery or surgery + radiation.

The American Association of Neurological Surgery or AANS is a great resource for information on brain tumors. The symptoms will vary in accordance to the networks involved and the effect on blood vessels and conduction changes due to the tumor. Some infiltrate the brain and some do not.
It depends on the kind of tumor, and its location. Some can be watched with serial imaging, and may never need surgery. Some need surgery urgently.
Your friend should send in the images for review.
Surgery is the optimal treatment for most brain tumors. This is especially true in someone as young as your friend. Sometimes surgery cannot remove the entire tumor if it is in critical locations, however.
