Pathologist (Pediatric) Questions Persistent Cough

What is the cause of my son's persistent cough?

My son is 10 years old, and he has had a persistent cough already for 2 weeks. What can be the cause? Would he be referred to any tests?

A persistent cough could have many etiologic factors to take in consideration. Most common at that age is asthma, allergies, or a chronic infection in the sinuses or airways can cause chronic cough. A protracted bacterial bronchitis, a prolonged infection in the bronchial tree. Could also be an irritation in the throat or inhalation of foreign object as well. Please check with you doctor’s child. Thank you.
Persistent cough can be due to irritation in the throat. Checking the tonsils is advisable. If purulent phlegm is noticed, sputum culture must be done but prior any antibiotic treatment.

Hello,

Persistent cough is usually due to post nasal drip, meaning he has some sort of allergy or cold and the nasal nose fluid mucus drips into his throat and causes him to cough. Other reasons to cough are virus infection and esophageal reflux, meaning his food comes back to his throat from his stomach. He should be seen by an otorhinolaryngologist, which is what we call an ENT.
I hope this helps. Thank you.
