“What is masked depression?”
I came across the term masked depression when I was in one of my classes at school. My professor didn't elaborate on what it meant, and I've never really heard of it before. What does masked depression mean?

I believe it means covered up, meaning people on the outside looks great but inside they are depress. Basically pretending to others
Masked depression is a diagnosis for subconscious thoughts/feelings that cause or contribute to an individual's overall feelings of worthiness. It can be manifested by excessive sleeping, isolation, overeating, overspending, etc., to validate a sense of worth or purpose.
I believe masked depression refers to symptoms a person reports or exhibits that one typically does not associate with depression yet the person does suffer from underlying depression. For example, a teenager may primarily exhibit oppositional behavior increasing the possibility that his or her depression never gets recognized.

Somatic symptoms cover the underlying disorder.
When the symptoms are different than regular depression and so it is not caught as a disorder or depression at first or at all.
