What is the best way to treat gastroenteritis?

I am a 54 year old male. I want to know what is the best way to treat gastroenteritis?

Hydration, light foods as tolerated. Antidiarrheals are ok, usually. Antibiotics only for complicated or prolonged cases.
Most causes of infectious gastroenteritis are "self limited" and need no treatment. If symptoms persist for more than 10-14 days, I would seek care with your PCM.

Keep yourself very well rehydrated. If symptoms are severe and you can't keep fluid down, then you will need an IV. Stool testing might be required sometimes. Please consult if there is blood in the stool or in the vomit.
Thank you.

If you have a viral gastroenteritis, the treatment is supportive - gatorade for electrolytes or pedialyte, bland binding diet, lots of fluids, - if you have a fever or severe abdominal pain, or if you are unable to tolerate liquids, please go to the emergency room for IV fluids
