Cavities usually don't hurt. It is when the decay gets close to the nerve. artery, vein complex in the center of your tooth, you may have sensitivity to hot, cold., sweets. By that time you are very close or in the nerve.
That's why you need to visit your dentist at least twice a year. Good home care is necessary. If you see an hour glass., or a an egg timer. You have two rectangles connected with thin plastic or glass rod. You place the empty side down and sand flows through to the empty side filling it up.
A cavity looks like a small dot. When it reaches the dentin, the cavity expands. Dentin is beneath the enamel. Dentin is softer than enamel so the decay can spread through the dentin and reach the nerve.
Because beginning decay may be painless. having your teeth checked at least twice a year is a must.

Best to have regular dental checkups so that your dentist can detect early cavities.
