Don’t drink or eat anything for at least 8 hours, and take your medication with as little water and follow the instructions given by your nurse the day before your operation.
No solid food 6 to 8 hours before surgery.
-Heavy meal within 6 hours
-Smoking within 24 to 48 hours
-Light snack within 4 hours
Thats a vague question, but without knowing what type of surgery you are having a few "don'ts" regarding general anesthesia are:
-Don't eat any sooner than 4 hours before general anesthesia (sometimes longer depending on the type of surgery and other medical problems you have
-Don't drink alcohol or do recreational drugs less than 24 hours before general anesthesia. Also, very importantly, let your anesthesiologist know what type of recreational drugs and how frequently you use them.
-Don't smoke less than 24 hours before general anesthesia. And actually, the longer you can abstain before surgery the better your surgical healing.
-There are also several prescription and over-the-counter medications to avoid before general anesthesia. You should consult your surgeon or an anesthesiologist before having surgery to know what these are.
Just follow your instructions given to you by the hospital or surgery center, especially regarding avoiding eating and drinking after midnight or the specified time. Take the medications you are told to take only.
You will most likely meet with your anesthesia provider prior to general anesthesia. Depending on the procedure you are having and if taking any medications, you will be instructed to not take anything by mouth for at least 8 hours prior to your procedure. Certain medications we would allow you take with a sip of water. As to what else you shouldn't do, rather vague, but use common sense, your activity isn't restricted, but try not to run a marathon :)
That depends on your health status. But typically, general anesthesia in healthy 26-year-old male does not require any special preparation with exclusion of fasting requirements (NPO or nothing per mouth) and stopping/continuation of medication/supplements/herbal medications taken by patient.

If you are healthy individual and surgery does not require pre-operative assessment a few days before surgery, then expect to receive a call from hospital nurse 24-48 hours before with all instructions regarding fasting requirements and medications. If you need pre-operative assessment, then during that visit the patient receives all necessary instructions. If any questions arise, please do not hesitate and call your surgeon's team and ask questions.

It would be best not to smoke, or to eat large or difficult to digest meals the days before a general anesthetic.

Don’t drink alcohol the night before, don’t smoke for at least 3 to 4 weeks before, and don’t eat for eight hours before anesthesia.

Get up as soon as you want. Research shows that remaining supine after a spinal does not affect the probability of contracting a spinal headache. The key is to lay down if you develop even a mild headache. One study had 100 people remain supine for 12 hours, and 5 developed a spinal headache. The same study had another 100 get up soon after a spinal, and 5 developed a headache.
1. It is advisable to stop smoking for at least 2 weeks before surgery as smoking delays wound healing.

2. It is also advisable to avoid alcohol for 24 hours prior to surgery.

3. Nothing to eat or drink after midnight is important so that when you are anesthetized, you don’t aspirate as that could have fatal consequences.

4. All vitamins should be stopped a week prior to bleeding as they would cause more bleeding intra operatively.

5. Recreational drugs should also be stopped even a month before as they can interfere with how you metabolize anesthetic medications and also affect your analgesic requirements.
