Usually in the left lower quadrant of the abdomen, but could also be in the lower abdomen in general. Pain is usually associated or coexists with bowel movements.
IBS, Irritible bowel syndrome can be thought of as having two aspects inherent to the conditin that affects about 15% of the poplulaiton.
There is an excessive production of gas within the gastrointestinal tract which dilates the caliber of the bowel.
THere is also increased visceral hypersensitivity which makes even small distension / dilation painful in those with the syndrome.
Measures that are designed to decrease gas such as dietary modificaiton, chewing food better, eating high fiber foods to maintain regular bowel movements, utilization of probiotics to create a less gas producing flora should be helpful. Creating an individualized food diary that determines what foods are problematic is usually helpful.
Measures that are designed to relax the small bowel / decrease the visceral sensitivity are more tenuous. They include smooth muscle relaxants such as peppermint oil, and cognitive behavior therapy.
Last thing to realize is that IBS is not an allergic situation, although eating foods that you are indeed allergic too will create gas and make the situation worse. Therefore, if a person is on vacation, lying on the beach (pre and post COVID), without any of the daily pressures, foods can be enjoyed that may not usually be tolerated.
On the other hand, if you are working on a deadline, having problems with your significant other, or dealing with any type of pressurized situatioin (including COVID19) then you may not be able to handle foods that you would otherwise have no issue with.
SO my advise is to monitor not only the specific type of food but also the amount.
Several decades ago an adolescent begged me to eat pizza, after she had a terrible reaction.
I told her to ask the pizzeria to cut the slice in half. Eat half and save the rest for the next day
She did fine and thanked me.

IBS pain generally is derived from dysfunctional spasms in the small intestine, whereby pain receptors in nerves lining the small intestine are stimulated by the abnormal smoothe muscle contractions, resulting in the variable cramping, diarrhea, bloating, and constipation in patients suffering from the syndrome.
