Your eyes may be drying while you sleep or may be infected with bacteria or viruses. You should see an ophthalmologist to also rule out high pressure or corneal infections.
Perhaps your eyes are getting dry, or you have an allergy to the feathers in your pillows, or you are burying your eyes into your pillow....or you don't take out your contact lenses every night. You may even have an increase in your intraocular pressure in the dark. I would recommend that you seek the evaluation of an ophthalmologist to check your eye health.
A common cause of eye pain in the morning is nocturnal exposure. If the eye opens partially during sleep it dries out. Try using thick gel based lubricating tears at bedtime. If this does not help, you should see an ophthalmologist. Other causes could be recurrent erosions or blepharitis. Your doctor can detect these on exam.
