Why does my wife get cold sores?

My wife has cold sores that she attributes to her hyperthyroidism and Graves disease. Her Dr prescribed Valacyclovir, is this common?

Yes, the valcyclovir is common as it treats the virus that lays in wait and causes cold sore. If her immune system is compromised like with thyroid, it CAN be; it does NOT mean thyroid causes it.
Hi,

"Cold sores"/ "night fever"/ "herpes blisters" are viral in nature and can be recurrent. The main reason for the recurrence is due to a decreased in the immune system. This can be as a result of high stress levels, poor diet, lack of sleep, another viral illness, anything that depressed the body's immune response, not necessarily due to hyperthyroidism. If this continues, as it seems to be doing, valacyclovir, Valtrex is a good antiviral agent which will allay the symptoms..
Cold sores result from a virus in the skin where she has the breakouts. It will run its course if untreated but there is some evidence that high doses of L-lysine helps to shorten the course. Also thought that the virus may be reactivated by cold, sun, and low immunity.
