  • Is acupuncture good for arthritis in the hands?

Great question, and yes, acupuncture is good for arthritis in the hands. I find that patients can get very good results especially when I use Tung style acupuncture for this. Follow your acupuncturist's advice on food selection and herbal remedies, and you should be able to have notable improvement soon. Good luck! READ MORE

  • How long does acupuncture take to work for leg pain?

Hello, My name is Stephen Dell Jones, I am an acupuncturist who treats leg pain for various reasons routinely. So, first of all, the answer would kind of depend on what the reason for the leg pain is. Leg pain can be due to sciatica, knee joint pain, hip joint pain, muscle spasms, or other reasons. In general, effective styles of acupuncture address pain within seconds. This does not mean that if someone has advanced arthritic changes in their knee or hip, that they will be pain free for good. But one should be able to notice a change in their pain on the first session. READ MORE

  • Is acupuncture good for insomnia?

Hello and thank you for the question. Yes, acupuncture is good for insomnia. Insomnia can be tricky depending on the chronicity. If someone has had insomnia for many years, it can be very slow to improve. People who have insomnia for a short duration can generally improve much quicker. I have noticed that in general it is always good to have healthy sleeping habits and not deprive oneself of sleep due to work and very busy schedules for a long time. The people who do tend to develop chronic sleeping difficulties. Anyhow, consult with an acupuncturist who has experience with it and you should be able to have improvements. Good luck. READ MORE

  • Is acupuncture for your neck safe?

Acupuncture for the neck is very safe. First of all, many acupoints that are done to treat neck pain itself are not on the neck, rather, on the arms and legs, but they will treat neck pain. There are of course acupoints on the neck itself, and they are safe when done by a properly trained acupuncturist. I've been treating neck pain for 10 years, and I can tell you that it is very effective for chronic and severe neck pain. READ MORE

  • Is it safe to do acupuncture every day?

At acupuncture school, I had a teacher who had been a director of the acupuncture department of a Beijing University hospital. He would tell us that many people would receive acupuncture everyday for an ongoing basis. Even people who did not need it would come in because it was covered by the government. We can be sure that there are no deleterious effects of receiving acupuncture daily. READ MORE

  • Is acupuncture in the neck safe?

Hello, and thank you for your question. I have been treating various degrees of neck pain and injury for 10 years, and I can tell you that acupuncture in the neck from a properly trained and qualified acupuncture practitioner is very safe. Furthermore, it can be a very effective and efficient treatment for both recent and chronic neck pain. Be sure to see an acupuncturist who treats pain and is fully trained and licensed, and you will be in good hands. READ MORE

  • What does acupuncture do for anxiety?

Acupuncture can work well for anxiety. Be sure to see an Acupuncturist/herbalist that also uses Chinese herbals, as that too can help you with anxiety in the long run. READ MORE

  • How do you know if acupuncture is working?

I treat back and neck pain almost daily, and have for years. You will know if acupuncture is working for your back pain if your back pain reduces about 5 seconds after the needles are put in. Pain is the fastest thing to get results for, and yes, should drop literally within seconds. READ MORE

  • How many acupuncture sessions does it take to see results?

It often depends on how long you have had the headaches, as well as the underlying cause. For some people, one session starts giving results. READ MORE

  • Does acupuncture help with spinal stenosis?

Hello. I have treated back and neck pain well for over 7 years, having worked on over a thousand back pain cases. Spinal stenosis can improve with acupuncture, the prognosis depending on the cause of the stenosis. Sometimes the spinal canal is naturally narrower in a person, sometimes it is due to a disc, sometimes arthritis, or growths, enlarged ligaments or tumors. If you do not have results within a handful of acupuncture sessions, I would firmly recommend seeing an acupuncturist who also uses a special type of injection called point injection therapy, as this can do more for arthritic issues even. Do leave surgery as a very last option. READ MORE

  • How often should I go for acupuncture?

I am a Doctor of Oriental Medicine, and I treat neck and back pain with acupuncture and other methods. To answer your question accurately would require more information. Such as the condition of your back, the problems you may have- degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, hardware from surgery, etc. However, in general, a therapy should be giving you some improvements over time for you to keep doing it. Acupuncture is no exception. Sometimes, people have such a back problem that they may need more help- that is when point injection therapy can be very useful. Some Acupuncturists do point injection therapy, and it may be a good idea for you to try it. I see great results with it. READ MORE

  • When should I get acupuncture treatment for fertility?

Great question, and the answer is a bit longer than you may think. The best thing to do is have something called a micronutrient test done 6 months before you want to start trying. You need this test to determine which parts of your biochemistry and metabolism are not optimal. You are low in some nutrients, everyone is, but no one knows it until years later when it starts to show as a problem. One of which can be infertility. Many nutrients play a role in egg production and health, hormone optimization, etc. And no, just taking prenatal vitamins, or any vitamins, will NOT fix the problem, since without knowing what you are trying to fix, you may be doing what usually happens- taking too much of what you do not need, and not enough of what you do need. The answer is to find out what your unique body needs, and then give it the full 4-6 months that it takes for nutrient repletion. Next is to begin the acupuncture- you will want weekly treatments for 6-8 weeks to prime your body (don't worry about getting pregnant here), then 2-4 more weeks of treatment to become pregnant. Always be sure to tell your Acupuncturist if you have a blocked fallopian tube (acupuncture can help), or low egg quality or any issues with your cycle. Herbal medicine (yes it is totally safe and quite helpful to take while trying and while pregnant) is very important for these issues. Best of Luck!! Tampa Bay Acu Health and Spine READ MORE

  • Is an achy feeling normal in acupuncture?

Yes, a sensation that is often described as "heavy" or "thick" is the natural phenomenon of the acu pressure point being activated. Often, a strong sensation can cause more therapeutic effect. READ MORE

  • I have arthritis, and I'm considering acupuncture. Will it help?

Hello and thank you for your question. I have treated knee pain from arthritis numerous times, and I can tell you that people generally tell me they feel better soon. One reason you may have seen mixed reviews is because certain people with more advanced arthritis in their knees, even with large swollen knee joints, may have limited benefit. Like all things, the response often depends on the severity. Also, if you are in a state where acupuncturists can do a method called point injection therapy, know that this may be even more effective than acupuncture for joint pain. Best of luck to you. • Can acupuncture improve sleep?

Acupuncture is used for insomnia. In my clinic i find that results can be obtained within one or two treatments when the insomnia has been a problem for just a couple months. If it has been an issue for years, it will take longer to help. READ MORE

  • Can acupuncture treat chronic fatigue syndrome?

I have treated chronic fatigue many times, and yes acupuncture is helpful. A good acupuncturist will be able to use Chinese medicine theory to find out the underlying nature of the problem. Then they may use acupuncture to stimulate your body into better overall functioning, as well as Chinese herbal medicine to strengthen your system. Each person is unique, so a full evaluation gives information about where your body is lagging. READ MORE

  • Lately I've been experiencing a lot of fatigue. Can acupuncture help?

Certainly acupuncture can help you with fatigue. It is also very important to rule out certain more serious reasons for fatigue, such as an internal bleed, a nutrient deficiency, or endocrine disorder. It may be best to start with a lab work-up and stool occult test. See a qualified physician and, if all comes out okay, follow up with an experienced acupuncturist who can help you with acupuncture and herbal medicine. READ MORE

  • Is acupuncture helpful in boosting fertility?

Acupuncture is very helpful in increasing fertility. Especially when done by an acupuncture physician who is well-versed in fertility. Also very important are Chinese herbal medicine, to help strengthen the body's natural functions, and nutrition. A special micronutrient test can and should be done 6 months before you begin trying in order to give your body the time it needs to fill in the nutrient deficiencies you have. And you do have nutrient deficiencies; everyone does. The key is learning which. READ MORE

  • Is it advisable to take acupuncture treatment along with normal medication?

The only risk in getting acupuncture with your hypertension drugs is that you won't need as much of the drugs soon. I treat hypertension, and results should start coming after the first or second treatment. Not only do I recommend acupuncture, I also recommend herbal medicine along with your pharma prescription. Understand that they can help each other work better, not oppose each other. READ MORE

  • Can acupuncture treat my digestive disorders?

You should certainly attempt acupuncture for your issues. Understand first of all that a slow digestive system can be a sign of thyroid disorder possibly, so in depth testing by an Acupuncturist can be helpful. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can help you with reflux and bloating as well. READ MORE
