  • Is acupuncture recommended for skin conditions like eczema?

For eczema, it will be more helpful to see an acupuncturist for herbal medicine. There are formulas to help this kind of issue. They may be taken internally and applied topically as well. Acupuncture can be helpful for skin issues, but probably as an adjunct to the herbal medicine, and dietary modifications. Also, consider the use of a Halotherapy (salt) spa, or perhaps epsom salt bath. READ MORE

  • Is there any way acupuncture can help treat asthma?

Certain styles of acupuncture can be very helpful for asthma. I work in what is called a halotherapy spa, where people come for respiratory issues. In my experience, Tung style acupuncture gives rapid help for asthma, even an acute asthma attack. Herbal medicine is also helpful, and can be taken in conjunction with a conventional drug for asthma. READ MORE

  • Is there a cure for acute arthritis in acupuncture?

A complete cure for arthritis may be a work in progress, but great improvements can be made with natural methods. I would recommend finding an acupuncturist who can guide you with food choices (Chinese Medicine has specific theories on how foods affect joint health), herbal medicine, acupuncture and a newer method called biopuncture, where natural herbs or formulas that reduce inflammation and help joint health are injected into acu points. • How long does acupuncture treatment usually last?

Migraines are an open ended issue. In my clinic I have had patients who had migraines for a year, got two treatments, and never had a migraine again. Then some need a treatment every six months as maintenance. Then some people, usually those who have had migraines since early childhood and are now middle aged, get slow, gradual results. For these types I will sometimes also use a form of biopuncture to give more results. READ MORE

  • Can acupuncture help treat thyroid imbalance?

Acupuncture will certainly treat thyroid imbalance. I have helped people who presented with hypothyroid. A skilled acupuncturist will get an overview of all the patients' symptoms and body functioning, then be able to improve their functioning and energy within a month or two. READ MORE

  • I have a migraine problem. Should I see an acupuncturist?

You certainly should get acupuncture. Many people have great relief from migraines with acupuncture. You could expect results to start in 3-5 treatments. READ MORE

  • Does acupuncture work for anxiety?

Acupuncture works very well for anxiety, as does herbal medicine and certain homeopathic preparations that your acupuncturist may also have for you. READ MORE

  • I am having a lot of stress due to menopause and I am unable to sleep soundly. Should I go for acupuncture treatment?

In Chinese medicine, menopausal symptoms are seen as shifts in kidney, liver and blood status. Several herbal formulations can help restore balance and alleviate the symptoms. Acupuncture can assist and promote deep relaxation and sleep as well. In my practice, women tell me the treatments are paramount in dealing with theses issues. READ MORE

  • Can accupuncture help in bringing down my cholesterol?

In my practice in Florida, I am able to order lab work. So, I evaluate blood work for cardiovascular risk based on recent literature on the subject. While ldl and hdl are factors in the evaluation, it's also important to measure other factors such as CRP and homocysteine, for example. With more information, important changes can be made to improve overall cardiovascular health. So, to finally answer your question, acupuncture probably won't help your cholesterol, but an acupuncturist who orders, evaluates and helps you to modify lab work with herbs and nutrition will be a help. • I have headaches frequently. Can acupuncture treatment help?

For headaches, acupuncture is one of the primary and most important treatments. I have worked on people who stopped having headaches or migraines after 3-4 sessions, others have less frequent and/or less severe migraines. Each person is a little different, but most have good results with a few sessions. I hope this helps. Stephen Dell-Jones, DOM, MS READ MORE

  • Can acupuncture help in treating joint pain?

Acupuncture works very well for joint pain. It is sometimes helpful to use a Chinese medicine herbal formula as well, which will be based on your custom needs. Your licensed acupuncturist can help you with this. READ MORE

  • Can acupuncture help in treating vertigo?

Yes, acupuncture is useful in alleviating vertigo. You may also benefit from Chinese herbs, once an Acupuncturist has evaluated the nature of your condition. READ MORE

  • Does it hurt when acupuncture needles are inserted in the body?

Acupuncture needles do not hurt much at all. Actually, what you feel is the pressure point itself being "activated", so to speak. If you have headaches, the tiny initial prick is well worth results that last. READ MORE

  • Is it true that people suffering from high blood pressure should not try acupuncture?

People with high blood pressure SHOULD certainly get acupuncture. Acupuncture is actually one of the primary treatments for high blood pressure. At Tampa Bay Acu Health and Spine, we are able to get people's BP under control or get them off their BP meds within 6 weeks (with close monitoring of their BP readings and follow up of course). We use Chinese herbs also for maintenance of BP control. Acupuncture should be used much more for high blood pressure, it would help Americans. Stephen Dell-Jones, DOM, MS READ MORE

  • I feel very sleepy after my acupuncture session. Is this normal?

Feeling very relaxed, even "spacey" or sleepy is not uncommon right after acupuncture. Often times people who are habitually overworked and/or don't get enough rest report to me that they slept an extra long time the next day. Feeling sleepy is acceptable after a treatment. READ MORE

  • How does acupuncture help in treating infertility?

Acupuncture is know to be able to help enrich the endometrial lining, assisting in implantation. It can also be used to help harmonize general gynecological function, and even help unblock some cases of fallopian tube obstruction by way of encouraging internal movement of blood. READ MORE

  • Is acupuncture a complementary treatment or does it treat ailments by itself?

The answer to your question is the same answer as if you asked about chiropractic, physical therapy, pharmaceutical therapy, or any method: It depends on the problem. Yes, there are times that acupuncture is the only therapy needed. Other times, cupping and acupuncture, other times, herbal medicine, acupuncture. Some problems need acupuncture, biopuncture, PT, etc. Also, acupuncture is one branch in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and when you see a Doctor of Oriental Medicine, you will most likely receive acupuncture along side some of the other therapies such as cupping, herbal medicine, nutrition, and point injection therapy. READ MORE

  • Can acupuncture help with my son's asthma?

Acupuncture can be a very good adjunctive therapy in asthma cases. Some styles of acupuncture can even quell a coming asthma attack. But in most cases, an Acupuncture Physician who treats asthma will be able to give same day results for asthma. READ MORE

  • How does acupuncture treat indigestion?

Indigestion is a common condition especially in our country (US). It is important to try to eat in a relaxed environment, not too quickly, belt and clothing not too tight, and of course not too much food at one time. If more help is needed, then Chinese herbs for digestion, selected based on his specific symptoms, will be quite useful. READ MORE
