Among his clinical and academic positions, he serves as an Assistant Attending Physician at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, Cornell University, and as a Gary M. Sumers Education Scholar at Weill Cornell Medical College, Cornell University.

Heavily engaged in the education of medical students, Dr. Esquivel directs the third-year internal medicine core clerkship. He is interested in ways to optimize learning and has developed innovative methods of teaching communication skills, interprofessionalism, and reflection to students. The formation of professional identity in young trainees is also an area of great interest to him. For his commitment to education and mentorship of students, he has been recognized with several teaching awards.

Academically, Dr. Esquivel graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California, Davis in 1987 and his Master of Science degree from Yale University in 1989. He then went on to earn his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1994, after which he conducted his residency at Rochester General Hospital.

A Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) and a Fellow of the Society of Hospital Medicine (SFHM), he is board-certified in internal medicine and nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Prior to his career as a hospitalist, Dr. Esquivel conducted research on the genetic basis of renal diseases, including polycystic kidney disease and nephrotic syndrome. 

Hospital medicine is a medical specialty that exists in some countries as a branch of internal or family medicine, dealing with the care of acutely ill hospitalized patients. The primary focus is caring for hospitalized patients and co-management with other specialties. Hospitalists take an active part in medical care and ensure a safe discharge for the patients they take care of. Hospitalists are being increasingly involved in administrative roles, given their expertise and collaboration with various teams in the hospital. 

On a more personal note, Dr. Esquivel speaks several languages, including English, French, German, and Tagalog.
