The doctor has extensive physician leadership experience, most recently as Associate Director of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California; Associate Director and Comprehensive Transplant Director at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center; Chair of the Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery – Department of Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona; and Surgical Director of the Heart Transplant Program in the Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery – Department of Surgery at Mayo Clinic in  Scottsdale, Arizona.

He earned an engineering degree from Tulane University and his medical degree from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He then went on to complete his residency in  general surgery at Tulane University Affiliate Hospitals in New Orleans, Louisiana, followed by his residency in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Arizona in Tucson. He completed his Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Arizona in 2006. 

The author or co-author of over 100 research publications, Dr. Arabia has presented his work at professional conferences and meetings throughout the world. His clinical and research interests include the total artificial hearts, left ventricular assist devices, heart transplantation and biomedical engineering. 

He is board-certified in thoracic and cardiac surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, an American surgical organization devoted to surgery of the chest.

Among the doctor’s many accomplishments, he was the recipient of the Training Award of Excellence – American Society for Artificial Internal Organs in 1998, the ASAIO/Lippincott-Raven Book Award for abstract entitled, “Success Rates of Long Term Circulatory Assist Devices Currently Used for Bridge to Heart Transplantation,” in 1996, the Yoshioka & Akutsu Prize for abstract entitled, “Patient Selection for Successful Outcome with the CardioWest Total Artificial Heart as a Bridge to Heart Transplantation,” in 1996, among many others.
