    It is not normal for teeth to chip. Chipping simply means that excessive abnormal forces greater than the strength of the teeth are affecting the teeth. This generally occurs in one of two ways. Massive force in a fast, single incident such as a traumatic accident or smaller abnormal forces over a longer period of time such as grinding or clenching. As your question states that the chipping has occurred over a year, it seems likely that this isn't related to a traumatic accident.
