  • I don't understand how I got Periodontal disease

Genetics can definitely be a significant factor in an individuals susceptibility to gum disease. Other factors include systemic diseases, particularly diabetes, or other conditions that can trigger inflammation in the body. Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums and bone around the teeth and, just like any other infection, the strength of your bodies immune system can affect your ability to fight the disease. Having any of these associated risk factors does not necessarily mean you can't develop and maintain a healthy mouth. Periodontal disease is very treatable in the earlier stages through effective professional and home care and maintaining periodontal health may simply mean visiting your dentist on a more frequent basis for preventive care which might include cleaning deeper below the gum line in the space between your teeth and gums. • Is water-flossing as effective as regular flossing?

Traditional flossing, using proper technique, has the edge in terms of removing plaque, especially between teeth and under the gum line. Water flossing is great for removing food debris from hard to get to areas which is why it is so useful when wearing braces. Either one is way better than no flossing at all. If your boyfriend just won't do regular flossing than, by all means, encourage him to water floss. READ MORE

  • Wisdom teeth removal

There are three basic reasons that some wisdom teeth are removed by general dentists and some are referred for removal to an oral surgeon for removal. 1. The anticipated difficulty of the removal. Some wisdom teeth may be relatively easy to remove with basic instrumentation such as fully erupted teeth with uncomplicated root structures. These can often be removed by a general dentist. Other cases may be more complex requiring more sophisticated instrumentation and an increased level of expertise such as impacted teeth. These are more likely to be referred to an oral surgeon. 2. The level of expertise in oral surgery of the general dentist. Some general dentists have more of an interest in basic oral surgery and have taken the necessary training and have acquired the experience to do more complex cases in their offices. Other general dentists have little or no interest in doing oral surgery in their offices and refer all 3rd molar removal cases out to an oral surgeon. 3. If a patient requires or chooses to have their removals done under general anesthesia due to the difficulty of the case, anxiety about the procedure, or because of a desire to have all 4 wisdom teeth removed in the same visit. Most general dentists are not trained or licensed in general anesthesia, so those cases will typically be referred to an oral surgeon. READ MORE
