  • Diabetes

    Epsom Salt is magnesium Sulfate and this salt has some soothing properties and is generally safe. For unclear reason, there were people saying it can treat, cure and prevent diabetes. This is not the case based on science. You have done not harm to yourself soaking in Epsom salt and if it soothed sore muscles that is good. I would not recommend that you use this anymore but there are no long term consequences to soaking in this salt solution READ MORE

  • Is this infected?

    You need to see your podiatrist and if you do not have one you need to get one. If you have a vascular or general surgeon you can go there. This needs immediate attention. READ MORE

  • Adrenal nodules

    Adrenal nodules are fairly common and rarely clinically significant. Adrenal glands make different types of hormones. When I see a patient with adrenal nodules; I order blood tests to be sure there is no over or underfunction of these hormones. I also repeat a CT scan in about 6 months to be sure they are not growing. If the nodules are not causing hormone dysfunction and not increasing in size over 6 months; I repeat the CT in one year.   • Hypothyroidism symptoms

    The symptoms of hypothyroidism are not specific to hypothyroidism and the only way to know for sure is to have blood tests done. If the symptoms are related to an underactive thyroid; they resolve with thyroid replacement in about 3-4 weeks. I have found that most symptoms are reversed with levothyroxine at a dose that normalizes the thyroid level but some symptoms remain and are probably caused by something other than too little thyroid hormone.   • Can I eat fruits with diabetes type 2?

    Fruits are very healthy and are part of a metabolically healthy diet. Fruits should be consumed with meals and not as a snack between meals. The sugars in the fruit will be digested more slowly with other foods. Although fruits are healthy; juices should be avoided as the juice contains more sugar per volume than the fruit and is considered a concentrated sweet. READ MORE

  • How long does it hurt after thyroid surgery?

    The pain is rarely an issue after a thyroid operation. There is some soreness in the throat from having the endotracheal tube in place by the anesthesiologist. There is some tenderness along the suture line. But in my experience surgical pain is not often a problem and when I visit the person the day after the operation; pain is never mentioned. READ MORE

    Yes as long as the glucose control is reasonable. Dental implants are as successful in people with diabetes as the general population and the healing should be fine as long as the glucose levels remain less than180 most of the time READ MORE

  • Do you get anesthesia for thyroid biopsy?

    A thyroid biopsy is usually a fine needle inserted into the neck with a syringe. The needle is no more painful than a venipuncture and even local anesthesia is not necessary. Sometimes a surgeon does a biopsy surgically for diagnosis but this is not usually necessary. READ MORE

  • Is radioactive iodine treatment risky?

    Radioiodine treatment has been the treatment of choice for overactive thyroid diseases and thyroid cancer for over 85 years. At the doses used to treat an overactive thyroid; there are no long-term consequences and has been used on children as well as the elderly. The risks of untreated hyperthyroidism are far greater than taking a single dose of Radioactive iodine. Radioactive Iodine is generally safer than taking medications to block thyroid hormone production long term. READ MORE

  • What anesthesia is used for thyroid surgery?

    Thyroid operations use general anesthesia if a thyroidectomy is needed. Despite the operation being on the neck; the endotracheal tube is placed in the mouth and into the lungs and does not interfere with the operation. Local anesthesia is not useful for thyroid operations the surgeon needs to operate behind strap muscles and can be bloody. Thyroid operations are commonly done and complications are very uncommon.     Clearly, no operation is without some risk; however, general anesthesia is the only type of anesthesia for thyroid operations. Thyroid operations are fairly routine and the vast majority of the procedures are free of complications. The anesthesia risk is no higher for thyroid operations than any other type of operation.     The thyroid operations are often done as a one day procedure and depending on the post-operative blood test most people go home the same day. The I have had some people return to full activity in a day but I usually recommend a week to 10 days after the procedure before returning to full activity. READ MORE

  • What can the emergency room do for high blood sugar?

    If a person with a high glucose level is feeling well and there is no underlying illness causing the high glucose the Emergency Department can give additional insulin which the person can give at home. If that person is otherwise ill and is unable to eat because of the illness then the emergency department can provide intravenous fluids and treat the illness. If the reason the person is ill is because of severe hyperglycemia; then the person may require intravenous insulin and fluids until the glucose levels are safe. READ MORE

  • Is radioactive iodine treatment successful?

    Radioactive Iodine is one of the most effective treatments in medicine. When used to treat hyperthyroidism the results are generally excellent. There is a good chance the thyroid may be unable to produce adequate thyroid hormone after the dose but this is easily treated. The thyroid is the only organ to actively take up and use iodine so there are very few side effects. Drinking extra water around the time of the dose will decrease salivary exposure to the iodine. I have recommended Radioactive Iodine treatments hundreds of times and have had less than 10 times that it was not effective. READ MORE

    At the hospitals where I work the intravenous contrast is injected just before the scan is done and should take less than 15 minutes after the injection. READ MORE

  • Can iodine contrast cause thyroid problems?

    The iodine in the contrast material can affect the thyroid levels. In some individuals, it can increase the levels and in others lower the thyroid levels. Iodine contrast will not change the thyroid size and does not cause cancers to grow. The changes to the thyroid are transient and rarely need to be treated unless there are significant symptoms.
