Specializing in pediatric ophthalmology, Dr. Giles is experienced in treating eye diseases and eye muscle problems in children, as well as strabismus (muscle abnormalities) in both children and adults. He is affiliated with the Kresge Eye Institute with offices throughout the state of Michigan, including Bingham Farms, Detroit, and Warren.

Alongside his clinical role, he serves as a Professor within the Department of Ophthalmology of the Wayne State University School of Medicine. He is also the Chief Emeritus of Ophthalmology at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan, and the Past Vice-Chair of the Detroit Institute for Children Honors.

A 1957 graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, Dr. Giles went on to complete his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Michigan Medical Center. This was followed by a fellowship at the National Institutes of Health – National Institute of Neurologic Diseases & Blindness Uveitis.

Attributing his success to his advanced training and his empathetic personality, the doctor is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology, whose mission is to serve the public by improving the quality of ophthalmic practice through a process of certification and Maintenance of Certification that fosters excellence and encourages continual learning. 

In addition to having published over 80 articles in peer-reviewed journals, he remains a member of several professional organizations, including the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, the Michigan Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology, from which he received the Senior Achievement Award.

Pediatric ophthalmology is a subspecialty of ophthalmology concerned with eye diseases, visual development, and vision care in children. There are some ophthalmologists who opt to concentrate on one area of specialization and some who focus on working with children as pediatric ophthalmologists.

Among his philanthropic endeavors, Dr. Giles is a supporter of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and World ORT. He is the recipient of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Senior Honor Award, Best Doctors in America, and Woodward-White’s Best Doctors in America (since 1992). 

In his spare time, he enjoys playing golf. His favorite place to vacation is Aspen, Colorado. His favorite professional publication is the Journal of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.
