  • What helps with pain after tooth extraction?

If you are medically able to take it, ibuprofen and tylenol together reduce pain as much as a narcotic drug. Make sure not to exceed 2800 mg of either medication per day. READ MORE

  • Can I brush my teeth with a temporary crown?

Absolutely! In fact, good oral hygiene around your temporary crown will keep your gums healthy and make delivery of the permanent crown easier. READ MORE

  • Can you chew gum with a temporary filling?

It is best to avoid gum, or any sticky foods, with a temporary filling to prevent it from being pulled off the tooth. READ MORE

  • How long do stitches stay in after dental bone graft?

This depends on the type of stitches that were placed. If they used a silk sutures that have to be taken out by the doctor, those are traditionally removed within 7-10 days of the surgery. If they placed dissolving stitches, those stitches usually resorb between 2-4 weeks. READ MORE

  • How often should dental scaling be done?

It is recommended that a dental prophylaxis (cleaning) be completed every 6 months for the majority of people. On occasion, your dentist or hygienist may recommend a cleaning more often, every 3-4 months, if you have high amounts of build up or inflammation. If you had a deep cleaning, you should be receiving a cleaning every 3 months for at least a year following periodontal treatment. READ MORE

  • How long do teeth hurt after scaling?

Your teeth and gums may be more sensitive for 2-3 days after a deep cleaning. I recommend a warm salt water rinse, and if not medically contraindicated, taking some ibuprofen or tylenol as needed. READ MORE

  • Should you use mouthwash before bed?

It definitely doesn't hurt! Mouthwash is mostly to help improve breath, but if you swish well, it can also help to remove some bacteria that might have been missed while brushing. READ MORE

  • Can scaling damage gums?

If scaling is done improperly, yes, it can damage gums. However, it is well within normal to have swelling for 1-3 days after deep cleaning. I recommend rinsing with a warm salt water rinse, and, if not medically contraindicated, taking some ibuprofen or tylenol as needed. After 2-3 days, you should notice the swelling decreasing, less bleeding when brushing and flossing and less pain. READ MORE

  • Is it normal to have pain after a crown?

It is normal to have some slight sensitivity. Normal sensitivity can last up to a week and should be a quick "zing" to cold that goes away as soon as the cold is gone. If at any point you are having acute pain, pain to cold that lingers and aches, or any sensitivity to hot, please get an evaluation with your dentist. These other symptoms may indicate that the nerve within the tooth is not responding well to treatment. READ MORE

  • What can you eat with a permanent crown?

You should be able to eat most anything. With all crowns, I would caution against eating anything excessively hard or sticky on the crown to help prevent it from breaking in half or being pulled off. I always advise my patients to be very gentle on a crown for 24 hours after placement, because most dental cements take 12-24 hours to fully harden. READ MORE

  • Is rinsing with salt water good for your gums?

Yes, warm salt water rinses can help reduce inflammation. If the swelling continues more than 2-3 days, please seek an evaluation with a dentist. READ MORE

  • Can I use mouthwash if I have periodontal disease?

Yes, of course. There are mouthrinses aimed specifically at helping periodontal disease. READ MORE

  • Can I drink coffee after teeth scaling?

Yes, there is no contraindication. READ MORE

  • Can you leave Sensodyne on teeth overnight?

Absolutely! You can think of toothpaste as a medicine. The longer that your teeth are exposed to it, the longer the medicinal effects of the toothpaste have to work. Leaving the Sensodyne on your teeth if perfectly fine :) READ MORE

  • What happens if you don't clean your teeth before putting on Invisalign?

This puts your teeth at extreme risk for forming cavities. In general, your teeth are bathed in spit which help to mechanically wash away the bacteria sitting on your teeth and to neutralize their acid. With an Invisalign retainer in, the spit cannot do either of those things. Therefore, the bacteria will just sit under your aligner and eat away at your teeth. Having impeccable oral hygiene during Invisalign is important if you do not want cavities by the end of treatment. READ MORE

  • Teeth cleaning?

I am not sure that I would call it common practice; however, there is nothing harmful that you would have swallowed. READ MORE

  • How do I get rid of stains on my dentures?

I recommend cleaning dentures daily with warm soap and water on a toothbrush. Once a week, you can use a denture cleaner (like Polident) to soak the denture and remove build up and stains. READ MORE

  • Can you have cavities if you have a crown?

Yes. There is still natural tooth structure below the edge of the crown and underneath the surface of the crown. Therefore, you can get a cavity right where the crown meets the tooth which can then grow underneath the crown. If you believe that you have a cavity, please see your dentist right away. READ MORE

  • Do crowns weaken the teeth?

I would not say that crowns weaken a tooth, they just change it. When placing a crown, your dentist has to remove the complete outer shell of the tooth (enamel) from all sides so that they can essentially fit a hat on the tooth. This does mean that the tooth has no natural protective covering any more. However, the crown is serving that function once it is placed. Also, if the tooth had a crack in it, the crown is actually strengthening the tooth and preventing undo force and flexure of the tooth, like giving it a bear hug, so that the crack hopefully does not get bigger. READ MORE

  • How long does a bone graft last without an implant?

The bone graft can last forever; however, the amount of bone will change over time. The greatest amount of bone loss of a bone graft without an implant placed will occur within the first 12 months. Over time, the bone will continue to remodel and resorb, but the rate of atrophy will decrease over time. The surest way to maintain a bone graft is through placement of an implant as soon as the bone graft has fully healed and integrated. READ MORE
