  • Does acupuncture work for snoring?

There are many effective treatments for snoring but acupuncture is not numbered among them. I would strongly encourage you to see a physician who is familiar with this problem. That might include a sleep specialist or an otolaryngologist. Snoring can cause significant social stress and there is effective treatment available. READ MORE

  • Is there a pressure point to stop snoring?

There are many effective treatments for snoring but pressure points are not numbered among them. I would strongly encourage you to see a physician was for the midyear with this problem. That might include a sleep specialist or an otolaryngologist. Snoring can cause significant social stress and there is effective treatment available. READ MORE

  • Can you take sleeping medicine while pregnant?

I presume that "sleep problems" are a symptom of insomnia (difficulty falling and/or maintaining sleep). Insomnia has many potential causes, some of which are specific to pregnancy. In more general population anxiety, pain, depression, and acquired poor sleep behaviors account for most insomnia. Insomnia can often be addressed effectively without medication, and sedatives should not be taken if possible during pregnancy. I would strongly encourage discussing your complaints with a sleep specialist or with your obstetrician or perhaps both. READ MORE

  • Enough sleep?

Most adults need between 7 and 9 hours but few sleep that long. First, you need to have a consistent sleep and wake time that does not vary by more than +/- 30 minutes. It ought to be while it is dark out. If you are well rested you should not be falling asleep during the day when doing quiet or boring activities. If you fall asleep watching television or in meetings during the day you need more sleep. If that does not happen you might perhaps get by with less. There is a phenomenon called sleep inertia that makes some people groggy when they first awaken and it can take an hour or 2 for some people to fully awaken. That is a variant of normal and not of concern. If no amount of sleep within reason prevents you from falling asleep unintentionally during the day, there is likely a medical problem, and sleep physician consultation would be appropriate. • Which antidepressant is effective in treating insomnia in a patient with depression?

Depression is a common cause of insomnia. If your insomnia is caused by depression any effective antidepressant is likely to help. You should be aware that insomnia tends to respond more slowly than other symptoms to modern therapeutic drugs. Some antidepressants have effects that are alerting such as bupropion or fluoxetine, and some are relatively neutral such as sertraline or escitalopram, and some antidepressants are more sedating such as mirtazapine. Your physician will choose an antidepressant for you based on their experience and your complaints. Most patients are likely to require some adjustment in dosage or drug before finding the optimal regimen. READ MORE

  • Should I be worried if my child snores?

Snoring may or may not be a sign of sleep apnea and it is hard to know how to proceed without consulting your pediatrician. Talk to them about the problem. If they are concerned, they will refer you to a sleep specialist who treats children. Certain findings on physical, especially large tonsils and higher than ideal weight, as well as certain complaints such as inattention can help determine whether a sleep study is appropriate. • Is it safe to take more than 4mg of Galantamine? ( is 12 mg ok?)

This drug is used to treat cognitive impairment and is not part of sleep medicine therapeutics. The question needs to be directed to a neurologist or a geriatric psychiatrist. READ MORE

  • Surgery with sleep apnea?

Good question. Tell your physician and anesthesia team that you have sleep apnea and use a CPAP machine, and ideally tell them the pressure that the CPAP machine provides. That should be a number between 4 and 20. If there is an automatic CPAP, you can probably see that on the patient app. Your own doctor should also be able to provide that. If the surgical team knows about your sleep apnea, there should not be any unusual risk to you. READ MORE

  • Do psychiatrists treat sleep disorders?

Among the most common causes of insomnia are anxiety and depression. If you have those problems, a psychiatrist is a good starting place. If you do not, I would see a sleep medicine specialist for evaluation. READ MORE

  • How effective is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia?

It is an extremely effective technique for most patients. Anxiety and depression are among the most common causes of insomnia and if they are present, they need to be treated along with the insomnia for best results. I would encourage you to pursue this proven treatment. READ MORE

  • Can you have general anesthesia if you have sleep apnea?

Yes, surgery can be done safely. You need to tell your surgeon and the anesthesiologist about your sleep apnea. It would be helpful if you can tell them the operating settings for your CPAP machine if you use one. Knowledge of the set pressure or the maximum pressure on an auto titrating machine will help your doctors take the best possible care of you. READ MORE

  • Is acupuncture good for sleep apnea?

Unfortunately, there is no data that suggest acupuncture is useful in treating sleep apnea. Certain exercises might be; and there are limited data that learning to play and then regularly practicing on the Didgeridoo, an aboriginal Australian instrument, can diminish sleep apnea. READ MORE

  • How do you know when someone has insomnia?

Apnea is a complaint and does not require any test for diagnosis. It consists of trouble falling and/or staying asleep. This can be short term to last for a few days to a few weeks, and for some, it can be chronic, which lasts for more than a month. How common is insomnia? Very common (more than 3 million cases per year in the US). READ MORE

  • What causes night terrors in children?

Night terrors are a normal developmental variant in some children. They are not abnormal and do not have something that could be described as " a cause". It is appropriate to reassure parent and child that these are part of normal development and will pass as the brain matures. Night terrors should be distinguished from other problems such as posttraumatic stress disorder or substance abuse if those are relevant to the circumstances. READ MORE

  • Can chiropractors help with insomnia?

If you are having pain that a chiropractor could address, that might be a reasonable option. In the absence of pain, they would have no role supported by guidelines or controlled studies. READ MORE

  • How do you know if your child is not breathing normally during the night?

It is almost impossible to do this by simple observation. First step is to wonder if the child is at risk for abnormal breathing. Primary findings would be large tonsils, structural defects of palate or nose or allergies. Symptoms might include difficulty at school or snoring or difficulty focusing. Young children are rarely sleepy from apnea. If there is a question see your pediatrician. A sleep study could be required to answer the question with confidence. READ MORE

  • Can I take klonopin with 100 mg gabapentim for sleep?

Klonopin dose is not specified, but this is probably acceptable. The real question is why is a 38-year-old person taking Klonopin and gabapentin for sleep? Long-term sleeping medication is not a desirable intervention if at all possible. The possibility of a sleep disorder or a mood disorder should be considered. According to current guidelines, cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia should be considered as well. Talk to your prescribing doctor. READ MORE

  • How long does it take to recover from sleep apnea surgery?

Surgery is not a single thing and there are many possible procedures. There is unfortunately not a one size answer. You need to talk to you physician about your specific intervention. READ MORE

  • How do you treat sleepwalking in preteens?

Sleepwalking is a normal variant in children. It is a benign condition that generally needs no treatment other than reassurance and providing a safe bedroom environment to prevent accidental falls in a dark room. READ MORE

  • What position should baby sleep when congested?

The age of your child is not specified. Infants should always be placed on their back’s for sleep. This simple intervention reduces the incidence of sudden infant death syndrome. READ MORE
