Does a hair transplant require invasive surgery?
Hair transplant surgery is invasive. Most would call it minimally invasive depending on the way the procedure in performed. It is usually done under a mild sedation. At first the scalp has to be anesthetized with injections. This can be a little painful, but then it becomes numb. A strip of hair is then surgically removed from the back of the head (this is where the most resilient hair is found). It can also be removed by a techniques that removes individual follicular units (this will leave minimal scar). The follicular hairs are then separated, and carefully placed within the area of the scalp for transplantation. This is done with small punctures to the scalp. These are then allowed to heal, being very gentle with the scalp for a week or so. New hairs typically do not start to grow for 3-4 months after. This hair growth can last for many years. However, you still can experience some hair loss over time. READ MORE
Can plastic surgery remove scars from previous surgeries?
Old scar can be problematic and unsightly. Plastic surgery, which involves cutting out the old scar and meticulously stitching the edges together in layers, can help improve the way the scar looks and feels. No surgery or laser can permanently remove a scar. They can only improve it. READ MORE
Can plastic surgery remove birthmarks?
Plastic surgery is a common way to remove birthmarks. If it is small in size, a simple procedure of excision and stitching can remove it completely. If it is a very large birthmark, removal may require multiple staged smaller excisions with the possibility of tissue expansion done between the excision procedures. This is done to help preserve vital facial structures and for cosmetic reasons. Please consult with a board certified plastic or facial surgeon before having such a treatment done. READ MORE
What should I do to prevent an infection after plastic surgery?
It is very uncommon to get an infection after nose surgery. What is important is to follow your surgeons instructions to avoid any complications. It is likely that you will take antibiotics. It is important that you do not stick anything in your nose after surgery until your surgeons instructs that it is ok to do so. If you smoke, you should definitely stop prior to and for several weeks after. If you have pets, you should keep them away from your face after surgery for several weeks. And in general, you should keep your face clean with a gentle facial cleanser. READ MORE
What is the aftercare required after plastic surgery to treat a scar?
It is important to follow your surgeons post-op instructions. Usually this requires gentle cleaning daily with a mild facial cleanser. You may also have a dressing or tape to change. For most, stitches are removed no later than 7 days. Many surgeons will prescribe a silicone scar gel or bandage for long term healing. This will give the best healing and least visible scar. Please discuss this with your surgeon. READ MORE
I have a birth mark around my waist that looks very ugly. Can it be removed with plastic surgery?
Birth marks are generally treated with plastic surgery, but can also be treated with lasers. It usually depends on the type and size of the birthmark. If it is of a relatively small size, a simple excision of the lesion with closure using multiple layered stitches will do. This can be done under a local anesthesia. If it is a much larger birth mark, then it may require multiple staged excisions and closures, with tissue expansion in between each procedure. This may require general anesthesia for best comfort and control during the surgery. Please consult with a board certified plastic surgeon to discuss your goals and for full evaluation. READ MORE
Can liposuction work for diabetic patients?
Liposuction can be done on diabetics of both type I and type II. This I have done. It can be safe and without complications. Diabetes can however, increase your risk of complications such as infection and wound healing problems. Also, because of the stress from surgery, your glucose levels can be more difficult to control while your are healing. It is very important that you discuss your medical history with your plastic surgeon and get a full evaluation with your primary care doctor prior to having your procedure done. READ MORE
Can plastic surgery remove a birthmark?
Most plastic and facial surgeons are well trained to remove birthmarks from your face. They can place incisions to remove the birth mark in such ways to create the most natural look with minimal scar. Please be sure to consult with a plastic and/or facial plastic surgeon prior to having your procedure done. READ MORE
Is liposuction a permanent treatment?
Liposuction can be permanent. It removes the excess fat in the area being treated and can help sculpt and improve contours. This is best when abdominal muscles are tight and skin is firm with good elasticity. It is NOT a permanent solution to a tummy tuck. A tummy tuck is a completely different operation that is focused on addressing loose skin and loose muscle of the abdominal wall. This occurs frequently in mothers after pregnancy or even in those who have lost a significant amount of weight. It is best for you to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon for a full evaluation, and to discuss your goals and expectations. READ MORE
Can 15 year old burn marks be removed with plastic surgery?
Burn scars can be very disfiguring and this can cause anxiety and depression. These can sometimes be corrected or improved with additional treatments such as scar excisions and skin grafts. It is best that you consult with a burn specialist surgeon (a burn center) for a full evaluation and to be sure you are getting the best advice for treatment. READ MORE
Does liposcution help one lose weight or does it only tighten the skin?
Even though fat removal by liposuction can reduce your weight, liposuction is not meant as a weight loss treatment nor does it tighten skin. Liposuction is best for those who are near their ideal weight who have stubborn areas of fat excess. Liposuction can then be used to remove that excess and to sculpt and contour those areas to create a better looking figure. READ MORE
How long does a cool sculpting procedure last?
My practice does not have the Cool Sculpting device but I have had many of my patients have the treatment done. Cool Sculpting can give some improvements in areas treated that can be permanent. However, many areas have to be treated more than once. The results and changes seen are usually small. It is not a substitute for a liposuction procedure and having several treatments can be very costly. Liposuction is still the "Gold Standard" for fat reduction, removal, and true body sculpting. Your body contouring is usually completed with one treatment. Please see a board certified plastic surgeon for a full evaluation to address your needs. Thanks for the question READ MORE
Is a butt lift safe and all it's made out to be?
A butt lift is a surgical procedure. There are various types of butt lifts, but the most common one is a Brazilian Butt Lift. This is done by removing fat from one or more areas of your body with liposuction. The fat is then prepared and re-injected into the buttocks using blunt fat grafting cannulas. This is a surgical procedure and does have risks associated with it. I would recommend you consult with a board certified plastic surgeon to discuss your concerns and for an evaluation. Get to know Plastic Surgeon Dr. Steven Svehlak, who serves patients in West Hollywood, California.
Dr. Svehlak is a reputable, award-winning plastic surgeon who has been practicing at Sunset Cosmetic Surgery in West Hollywood, California since 2002. He delivers care with the utmost professionalism, honesty, safety, and ability.
Known as the expert in revisional body contouring surgery, Dr. Svehlak has patients come from all over the world for help in improving and fixing botched liposuction and body contouring procedures. He also performs many other types of surgery involving primary body contouring procedures, breast enhancements and tummy tucks (mommy makeover), as well as facial procedures such as facelifts, neck lift, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, and otoplasty (ear reshaping and pinning).
“What I love most about my profession is my ability through my knowledge and skills, as a plastic surgeon and doctor, to change someone physically, and through this step, improve a person’s self-confidence, emotions, outlook on life, happiness, etc. They just feel better about themselves. They feel beautiful. And when they reciprocate these changes back to me, I feel overjoyed, satisfied, and proud to be able to make such a profound effect on someone’s future” expressed Dr. Svehlak.
One important advancement that he is applying in his practice and for his patients is the art of regenerative treatments. He is excited about surgeries becoming more minimally invasive, where less is more, and creating more natural results with less anesthesia and quicker recovery.
Coming from the small quiet town of Oxford, Connecticut, Dr. Svehlak obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Connecticut in 1989. Pursing down the medical path, he earned his medical degree from New York Medical College in 1994. Wanting to further his training, he completed his residency in general surgery at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1999, followed by his fellowship in plastic surgery at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in 2001.
He learned the techniques of reconstructive surgery, including those applied in cancer, breast, and trauma surgeries. He gained additional training at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where he focused on facial reconstructive surgery, including cleft lip and palate. He also became quite experienced in treating many types of congenital hand deformities.
In 2002, Dr. Svehlak was offered an Advanced Aesthetic Fellowship in Beverly Hills, California. He worked side by side with a 30-year veteran of plastic surgery, performing rhinoplasty, breast augmentations and reductions, liposuction, and facial surgery. He became very knowledgeable in the art of cosmetic surgery and developed a keen eye in aesthetics. Although he was invited to join that practice, he decided to open up a practice of his own with a different plastic surgeon, Dr. Dan Yamini.
When asked about the future of his field, Dr. Svehlak responded that it will always advance based on the demands of the patients – “They demand more non-invasive treatments, with less downtime and more natural, long-lasting results. Nowadays, people lead busy lives and can’t afford the recovery and downtime associated with traditional surgery. I believe new therapies, such as Nano-fat and stem cell technologies, will become more common as part of our armamentarium to offer our patients. Although still controversial, the regenerative potential of these treatments are being proven in many clinical studies throughout the world, not only for cosmetic and plastic reconstruction but also to treat many diseases such as osteoarthritis, blindness, Alzheimer’s, heart disease, neurodegenerative diseases, etc.”
Fine-tuning his skills and developing a super speciality, the doctor is board-certified in plastic surgery by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). The mission of the ABPS is to promote safe, ethical, efficacious plastic surgery to the public by maintaining high standards for the education, examination, certification, and continuous certification of plastic surgeons as specialists and subspecialists.
In order to advance his efforts, he remains a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and the American College of Surgeons (Fellow).
Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty involving the restoration, reconstruction, or alteration of the human body. It can be divided into two main categories – reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery. A plastic surgeon’s primary responsibility is performing surgical and non-surgical procedures, and they use a variety of reparative and reconstructive techniques to get the job done.
Uncovering Hollywood’s secret to confidence and beauty, Dr. Svehlak has been featured in the Consumers’ Research Council of America’s Guide to America’s Top Plastic Surgeons for the past six years consecutively and is proud that Sunset Cosmetic Surgery was recognized among the Top 1% of BOTOX® providers in the nation. He has authored and co-authored numerous articles on plastic surgery techniques and has appeared on The View, Dr. Phil, KTLA Morning News, Entertainment Tonight, MTV, VH1 and Dr. 90210. Additionally, he has been quoted in a variety of magazines, including US Weekly, Elle, Stuff, Health & Fitness Sports Magazine, and Aesthetic Surgery Journal.
Personally speaking, Dr. Svehlak considers his greatest achievement to be meeting his wonderful wife, Wendy, and creating their beautiful daughter, Genevieve. “It is my family! It’s what I live for. It’s the joy of having them in my life.”
