Get to know Plastic Surgeon Dr. Steven Svehlak, who serves patients in West Hollywood, California.

Dr. Svehlak is a reputable, award-winning plastic surgeon who has been practicing at Sunset Cosmetic Surgery in West Hollywood, California since 2002. He delivers care with the utmost professionalism, honesty, safety, and ability.

Known as the expert in revisional body contouring surgery, Dr. Svehlak has patients come from all over the world for help in improving and fixing botched liposuction and body contouring procedures. He also performs many other types of surgery involving primary body contouring procedures, breast enhancements and tummy tucks (mommy makeover), as well as facial procedures such as facelifts, neck lift, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, and otoplasty (ear reshaping and pinning).

One important advancement that he is applying in his practice and for his patients is the art of regenerative treatments. He is excited about surgeries becoming more minimally invasive, where less is more, and creating more natural results with less anesthesia and quicker recovery. 

Coming from the small quiet town of Oxford, Connecticut, Dr. Svehlak obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Connecticut in 1989. Pursing down the medical path, he earned his medical degree from New York Medical College in 1994. Wanting to further his training, he completed his residency in general surgery at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1999, followed by his fellowship in plastic surgery at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in 2001.

He learned the techniques of reconstructive surgery, including those applied in cancer, breast, and trauma surgeries. He gained additional training at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where he focused on facial reconstructive surgery, including cleft lip and palate. He also became quite experienced in treating many types of congenital hand deformities.

In 2002, Dr. Svehlak was offered an Advanced Aesthetic Fellowship in Beverly Hills, California. He worked side by side with a 30-year veteran of plastic surgery, performing rhinoplasty, breast augmentations and reductions, liposuction, and facial surgery. He became very knowledgeable in the art of cosmetic surgery and developed a keen eye in aesthetics. Although he was invited to join that practice, he decided to open up a practice of his own with a different plastic surgeon, Dr. Dan Yamini.

When asked about the future of his field, Dr. Svehlak responded that it will always advance based on the demands of the patients – “They demand more non-invasive treatments, with less downtime and more natural, long-lasting results. Nowadays, people lead busy lives and can’t afford the recovery and downtime associated with traditional surgery. I believe new therapies, such as Nano-fat and stem cell technologies, will become more common as part of our armamentarium to offer our patients. Although still controversial, the regenerative potential of these treatments are being proven in many clinical studies throughout the world, not only for cosmetic and plastic reconstruction but also to treat many diseases such as osteoarthritis, blindness, Alzheimer’s, heart disease, neurodegenerative diseases, etc.”

Fine-tuning his skills and developing a super speciality, the doctor is board-certified in plastic surgery by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). The mission of the ABPS is to promote safe, ethical, efficacious plastic surgery to the public by maintaining high standards for the education, examination, certification, and continuous certification of plastic surgeons as specialists and subspecialists.

In order to advance his efforts, he remains a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and the American College of Surgeons (Fellow).
