After receiving my associates in biology, I attended the Tri-State College of Acupuncture in Manhattan and earned my Masters of Science in Acupuncture. There I learned the unique style of Acupuncture Physical Medicine (aka trigger point dry needling). Developed by our headmaster Mark Seem and based on Janet Travell's books on trigger points, this technique releases "knots" in muscles to alleviate musculoskeletal pain and even internal visceral symptoms (such as chest pain or digestive disorders) without the harmful injections of steroids or numbing agents. I was also well versed in many other tricks that go with the trade such as moxabustion, electro-acupuncture, cupping and gua sha. Currently, I am studying Classical Chinese Medicine under the mentorship of Timothy Aitken, a master practitioner and specialist in pediatric acupuncture. Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into strategic points on the body to achieve overall wellness. This technique developed over 3,000 years ago and takes a holistic approach to healing. All the symptoms that you're feeling come down to one root diagnosis: an imbalance between internal organs, and/or pathology that has made it's way into your body. Acupuncture works to correct these imbalances and pathologies by supporting your body's natural ability to heal itself. You and I are a team. That means that you have as big a role in your healing as I do. You have the ultimate control over your body and it is up to you to exercise it. Your health is your responsibility, and your healthcare team is here to support you.

How many sessions of acupuncture do you need for knee pain?
That depends on how long your knee pain has been in existence. The longer you have had it, the longer it will take to resolve. However, if you're not feeling some changes in your body within 5-8 treatments, I recommend trying a different practitioner or a different style of acupuncture. READ MORE

Does acupuncture work quickly?
It can, but that depends on why a patient is coming in for treatment. In cases of stress or anxiety for example, a patient may feel relief within minutes of inserting needles. In a case of chronic pain, however, it can take weeks, even months of regular treatment before a patient feels relief. Generally speaking, the longer a condition has been in existence, the longer it will take to resolve. READ MORE
Do laser acupuncture pens really work?
It does, though I don't recommend using a laser to try and treat yourself at home. It's important to note that though that technique may seem harmless, acupuncture is still medicine and activation of the points will change your body's function. Additionally, acupuncturists may use different colored lasers on specific points to achieve different goals. READ MORE

Neuromyelytis Victim, Continuous Muscle Contractions [20 or more per hour]?
I think acupucnture can be very helpful but I would first recommend treatments of moxabustion only as the needles may irritate her muscle spasms. Moxibustion is an herb that is burned on the skin (don't worry, we don't burn you!) and it activates the points similarly to how a needle would. Since the moxa itself doesn't penetrate the skin, it shouldn't irritate any muscle spasms, and the warmth and nourishment from the moxa may provide her with some immediate relief. I would recommend seeking out a practitioner of Japanese Acupuncture becuase that style works primarily with moxibustion and very gentle and superficial needling techniques. READ MORE

How long does acupressure take to work?
That depends mostly on if you are using the correct points. Though what can be found on the internet can be effective, the most effective points to use are best determined by your acupuncturist. That being said, the longer something has been in existence, the longer it will take to start finding changes and resolve. READ MORE
Does the acupuncture pen really work?
I DO NOT recommend the use of any "DIY" or "at home" acupuncture products. Though this medicine may seem harmless, if done incorrectly it can worsen your condition or even create other conditions. If you wish to work with techniques like acupressure at home, I recommend you speak with your acupuncturist for guidance. They can also teach you how to use some of the tools that we use in the clinic such as moxa, gua sha tools, cups, or TENS units. READ MORE
Can you do too much acupressure?
In a word, yes. Acupuncture is more of a "less is more" style of treatment. It's difficult to overstimulate a point with acupressure (if you do you'll probably just feel some irritation in the skin or muscle), but you can apply acupressure to too many points. I liken it to listening to a radio. You can listen to one station and absorb what's being said, but the more stations you put on, the harder it becomes to hear what each one is saying. Your body responds the same way to acupuncture points. READ MORE
Is acupuncture safe for diabetics?
Yes, and it can be very effective in lowering your blood sugar levels. The only thing I do recommend is that you carefully track your blood sugar levels. I have found that immediately after treatment, some patients will have a small spike, but it usually drops back down by the following day. READ MORE
