Dr. Roger J. Friedman M.D.'s Expert Contributions
  • Is the facelift procedure safe?

Is a facelift safe? Absolutely, in the proper environment with a board certified plastic surgeon. I prefer anesthesia monitored by either a CRNA or an anesthesiologist. READ MORE

  • Hematoma/ bruising after breast reduction

At this point in time I feel you might consider a second opinion from a board certified plastic surgeon. Roger Friedman, MD READ MORE

  • How long do I have to sleep on my back after breast augmentation surgery?

I find that my patients are more comfortable on their back for approximately 2 weeks and then when they go on their side it is with a flat feather pillow to cushion them. Roger Friedman, MD READ MORE

  • Why do my eyes look smaller after blepharoplasty?

This is a hard question to answer without before and after pictures. It may be attributable to swelling around your eyes giving that initial impression. Also if you had a canthopexy at the time of your procedure that may also be a contributing factor. The canthopexy often settles over time and your opening should be very close to your original. Roger Friedman, MD READ MORE

  • How long does rhinoplasty take to heal fully?

You must protect your nose for one month if it has been broken. Swelling will take 6 months to a year to resolve. You will know when the tip is soft. Roger Friedman, MD READ MORE

  • How painful is a neck lift?

Necklift should not be painful. There should be more a sense of tightness attributable to tightening the muscles. Roger Friedman, MD READ MORE

  • Does a facelift get rid of wrinkles?

A facelift helps to minimize wrinkles by addressing the loose skin and tightening/removing the excess. If there is still significant wrinkles you may require a resurfacing laser that addresses wrinkles but not significant skin laxity. READ MORE

  • Procedure confusion?

The only concern is that during a procedure with sedation if the patient relaxes due to the sedation they might inadvertently void. You as the patient need to consider that risk and decide what is comfortable for you. READ MORE

  • Does liposuction work on upper arms?

Think of your arms as a skin envelope with fat as the contents. If there is a minimal excess envelope, excess fat liposuction may solve the problem. I would consider Vaser as this method provides a component of skin tightening. If there is extra skin then you would require the removal of that extra skin with a linear scar. READ MORE

  • What age is best for a facelift?

What is the best age for a facelift? There is a misconception: It is not your age, it is how you age. Some people age better than others. The issue is whether the changes you are seeing bother you. Roger Friedman, MD READ MORE

  • Is rhinoplasty worth the risk?

Is rhinoplasty worth the risk? It all depends on how much you are unhappy with your nose. I think results can be dramatic. If you are concerned with regard to the outcome, go to a surgeon who can image you to better assist you in appreciating the goals of the surgery. READ MORE

  • How long does neck liposuction last?

Great question. The dependent factors are the quality of your skin and weight changes. Both will affect your ultimate result. Roger Friedman, MD READ MORE

  • How long after septoplasty will I look normal?

Recovery from a septoplasty alone should have minimal recovery and minimal swelling. If a rhinoplasty is included, you may have tip swelling for up to 6-12 months. Roger Friedman, MD READ MORE

  • How do you get a flat stomach after liposuction?

If the issue is just fat, after liposuction, lymphatic massage is very helpful. If the issue is muscles, then crunches and cross crunches are helpful. If there is a separation of the muscles, then you may benefit by surgery to sew the muscles back together. Roger Friedman, MD READ MORE

  • How long after a facelift will I look normal?

In my personal experience my patients are presentable with makeup at 8 days and great at one month. Roger Friedman MD READ MORE

  • How painful is liposuction recovery?

I would describe liposuction as the least delicate operation I perform with some of the most dramatic results. It is a bruise. The first two days are the worst. I am impressed at what can be accomplished with 1/4" incisions. Roger Friedman, MD READ MORE

  • What can you not do after liposuction?

Initially after liposuction, you will have swelling. I limit my patients to casual walks for the first 2 weeks to avoid blood pressure elevation. I then allow them to ease back into their routine based on how they feel the following day. Running and jumping do not feel good initially due to vibration, a better choice is an elliptical or walking fast on a treadmill. Ultimately, you will be able to exercise without limitation. Roger Friedman, MD READ MORE

  • How do you wash your face after rhinoplasty surgery?

After rhinoplasty, patients typically have a splint on their nose. That should be kept dry. The easiest way to wash your face at that time is a washcloth and just avoid the splint. Roger friedman, MD READ MORE

  • When can I sleep on my side after a facelift?

I suggest my patients sleep on their back for 2 weeks on a wedge to help facilitate the resolution of their swelling. If you elect to sleep on your side sooner you will appreciate that one side swelling will resolve faster than another. Roger Friedman, MD READ MORE

  • Can I take the fat from my stomach and put in buttocks?

The abdomen is a great source of fat for the buttocks as well as the flanks (love handles). They both compliment the contour and are a great donor site for fat. Roger Friedman, MD READ MORE
