Get to know Endocrinologist Dr. Mark A. Jara, who serves patients in Houston, Texas.
Dr. Jara is a fellowship-trained endocrinologist with a primary interest in the management of patients with advanced thyroid cancer. He joined the Endocrine family at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center as the newest oncologic endocrine fellow in July of 2020.
The Oncologic Endocrinology fellowship is a one-year program accepting one fellow per year. The program is the only one in the nation to provide advanced training for the evaluation and treatment of endocrine neoplasias. Fellows will acquire the skills and knowledge base for evaluating and treating patients with these complex endocrine tumors.
Originally from Paraguay, Dr. Jara graduated with his medical degree from Universidad Nacional De Asuncion Facultad de Ciencias Medicas in 2010. He then relocated to the United States, performing a residency in internal medicine at the University of Buffalo in 2016 and the J Maxwell Mckenzie Endocrinology Fellowship at University of Miami-Jackson Memorial Hospital in 2018. Since then, he has been on the faculty of University of Miami as an Assistant Professor.
A member of The Endocrine Society, he is board-certified in endocrinology, diabetes & metabolism and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
Endocrinology is a branch of biology and medicine dealing with the endocrine system, its diseases, and its specific secretions known as hormones. Endocrinologists have the training to diagnose and treat hormone imbalances and problems by helping to restore the normal balance of hormones in the body. The common diseases and disorders of the endocrine system that endocrinologists deal with include diabetes mellitus, as well as adrenal, pituitary, and thyroid disorders, among others.
