Having grown up in Springfield, Illinois, and the area around it, I am no stranger to all things Abraham Lincoln. • Do they clean your teeth before braces?

Because cleaning around your teeth is more difficult when you have braces, it is always recommended that you have a thorough examination with radiographs and also a dental cleaning before you have your braces put on. In addition, it is important to be very meticulous in your oral hygiene practices while you have your braces on. Gum tissues can get inflamed very easily and quickly during orthodontic treatment. Food particles have more places to stick to and can also increase your risk for dental decay and decalcification of your enamel causing white spots and weaker tooth structure. A fluoride rinse or a prescription fluoride toothpaste is also a good idea while in orthodontic treatment. READ MORE

  • What should I do for tooth pain after a filling?

You should contact your dentist. Often times, the new filling is just biting a little wrong. When a patient is numb it is often difficult for the patient to put their teeth together in the "usual" way. If the filling is hitting heavily this can cause the tooth to become sore. This will only get worse and there is an increased risk of fracturing the tooth or the new filling. READ MORE

  • Why does my tooth crown hurt more when I lay down?

If you notice the pain in your new crown occurs after you lay down (when you wake up), you could be clenching or grinding your teeth while you sleep. Treatment options could include, adjusting the crown, neuromodulators to relax the clenching muscles, or a bite guard. READ MORE

  • How do I clean my teeth after coffee?

Once a week it is ok to use a blend of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda to try to remove any stubborn coffee stains on your teeth. Regular morning and evening brushing a fluoride toothpaste and routine visits to your dental office for hygiene visits are also a must, especially if you want to keep your teeth not only healthy but white and bright! • What is the fastest way to get rid of inflamed gums?

Inflamed gums can be caused by such a variety of things and each would have their own unique way to treat. Periodontal disease, stress, hormone changes, trauma, overdue for hygiene visit, poor brushing habits, some medications, and infections are just a few of the reasons your gums could be inflamed. I would suggest the best way to get rid of inflamed gums is to visit your dentist for an accurate diagnosis as to the cause, in order to get the fastest resolution, as well as the safest and healthiest. I hope this helps! READ MORE

  • Does your oral health affect your ear health?

Certainly infections that originate in the mouth, whether from teeth or gums, can affect the tissues surrounding the mouth such as the ears. Also, TMJ dysfunction can also affect the ears and cause pain. It's important to remember that our entire body is connected and so one area that is inflamed or in dysfunction will have ramifications on many other areas of the body as well. READ MORE

  • What's the difference between composite veneers and porcelain?

Veneers are "facings" that go on the front of teeth to either change color, shape, position or tooth structure. They can be made from either composite or porcelain. Porcelain Veneers are much stronger and don't have as much issues with staining. Composite Veneers are made of composite which is tooth colored silica based resin. It is the same exact material dentists use for tooth colored fillings. These tend to be the less expensive option for veneers but they tend to wear faster and have issues with discoloration. • How long should you wear dentures each day?

You should remove your dentures whether a partial or complete denture at least several hours every day. It is easiest to do this when you are sleeping but if you feel more comfortable to take them out in the day, possibly while bathing/showering or while watching TV or doing house chores, that is fine too. Think of it as if you wear socks and never remove them. Your feet would be prone to infections, especially fungal. Your mouth is no different. READ MORE

  • How long after teeth removal can I get dentures?

It is possible to have your dentures fabricated before the removal of your teeth and then can be delivered at the time of your extractions. Your dentures will need a reline 6-12 months after the extractions, as your gum tissues will tend to shrink and tighten up, causing your dentures to be loose and/or develop pressure spots that will become sore. READ MORE

  • How often should dental implants be checked?

Dental implants need to be cleaned just as natural teeth. So, at least every 6 months it is recommended that they are cleaned and evaluated by your dentist. READ MORE

  • Can you eat steak with dental implants?

Absolutely you should be able to eat just as you would with your natural teeth when you have implants. Enjoy that steak or buffet! READ MORE

  • Should partial dentures be kept in water?

Think of your appliance like a sponge. When it isn't in a moist environment it tends to dry out and actually shrink. Therefore you may notice that it fits tighter or not at all if left to dry out. Be sure to keep you appliance when you aren't wearing it in a denture approved soak to help curb bacteria growth and keep your appliance fresh and fitting as best as it can. READ MORE

  • Can you drink coffee with partial dentures?

Yes, I do not know of any reasons why one cannot drink coffee with partial dentures. However, just as coffee stains natural teeth, coffee will also stain partial denture teeth, so proper home care, with brushing or a denture soak safe for partial dentures is important. READ MORE

  • How long should you wear partial dentures each day?

It's very important to take out any partial or complete denture for several hours a day. Ideally at night but if this is not possible then at least several hours during the day so that the tissues under the appliance can get some air to dry out and breath. Think of wearing your socks 24/7. Yeast infections and redness, sore spots can occur if left in all the time. Possibly take out the appliance while showering or bathing? Or while doing housework? READ MORE

  • How can I get used to partial dentures fast?

Wear them during the day as much as you can. Try reading a book, magazine or newspaper out loud. It lets your mouth get used to having the new appliance in there and teaches it how to function around it. This has proven helpful to my patients and I hope it helps you too. READ MORE

  • Gag reflex?

I would suggest that you read Korean out loud. Like read a Korean newspaper or book. That may help get your mind off of the gagging. Once it is in your mindset that something makes you gag, it is hard to overcome it. Patients that have new dentures often have gagging issues and I tell them the same advice. Read a book, magazine or newspaper out loud. It has helped tremendously with them. Good luck!!! READ MORE

  • Do dental crowns look natural?

Yes, with the new materials used to fabricate dental crowns, they appear extremely lifelike. Be sure to do your research. All crowns are not the same. And all dentists and dental labs are not the same either. You get what you pay for is not a lie. READ MORE

  • What is the fastest way to heal a gum graft?

Be gentle, do what your dentist recommends. Avoid alcohol and smoking. Also be careful in using alcohol based mouth rinses. Warm salt water rinses are often good to do. Or if your dentist has prescribed you an oral antibiotic rinse such as Peridex/chlorhexidine, that is great too. READ MORE

  • Will antibiotics kill an infection in the tooth?

Antibiotics can REDUCE infection in an abscessed tooth but until the source of the infection is taken care of, the bacteria is still there and it will come back and often times more resistant to antibiotics. It is important to remember that antibiotics just reduces the infection so that the dentist can obtain adequate anesthesia to treat the area. READ MORE

  • How do you know if your gums are healing after a tooth extraction?

A tooth extraction socket will heal from the bottom up so sometimes it is hard to tell if it is healing. In addition, the area may appear white and get mistaken for an infection. Essentially, and usually, the white you are seeing is just a scab that has formed and when a scab is under constant moisture it turns white. You may have noted this on another part of your body after taking a bath or shower, or swimming in a pool. Time and being gentle in the area is the best way to let your body heal. READ MORE

I consider my patients my dental family.  And I care about my family!”

Ranked one of the Best Dentists in Port Charlotte in 2020, Dr. Boehler is very proud of her new, modern dental studio recently opened in the summer of 2020, designed with a strong emphasis on patient comfort and ease, creating beautiful smiles in a relaxing spa-like atmosphere.
