  • Fall Prevention

More than 32,000 older adults died from falls in 2018. That is the equivalent of 88 older adults every day. Winter weather can lead to more falls due to wet and icy conditions outside, so durable boots with thick rubber soles with good traction are recommended. However more than half of all falls...

  • Will plantar fasciitis go away on its own?

New onset plantar fasciitis may improve with simple rest, ice, elevation for a few days followed by use of good conservative sneakers such as New Balance sneakers. However, if this problem persists more than a few days I'd recommend seeing a podiatrist to further diagnose and treat the condition. READ MORE

  • I have swollen feet and ankles out of the blue?

Painless swelling in both ankles with a sudden onset often is caused by a systemic issue meaning there's likely a health condition which started outside of the foot and ankle causing the swelling. This could include water retention, cardiovascular conditions, kidney conditions or even something simple like heat and salty food intake. I would recommend seeing your primary care physician. • Can you walk after big toe fusion?

For the first 4-8 weeks after surgery it is best to stay completely off of your foot as the bone heals. Once it has healed however you will be able to walk with the fused joint. READ MORE

  • How bad does a bunion have to be for surgery?

So long as the bunion is irritating or painful in shoes and you're interested in surgery you could get a surgical consultation with a podiatrist to determine the best surgical plan with risks, benefits, alternatives and complications discussed prior to surgery. Essentially, so long as you are aware of your expectations for surgery and you have an irritating bunion you can have surgery for a bunion. READ MORE

  • How long does it take for local anesthesia to wear off after foot surgery?

Typically local anesthesia in the foot lasts several hours, however, this changes with the patient's body chemistry, therefore, it can last an entire day. READ MORE

  • What helps heel pain after ankle surgery?

If the heel pain is immediately after ankle surgery, i.e., in the cast, call your doctor right away. You may have too much pressure on your heel in the cast. If you've fully recovered from the ankle surgery and you are out of the cast and only now are experiencing heel pain, physical therapy may be indicated. READ MORE

  • Should I go to ER, urgent care or wait?

I would recommend a second opinion/another podiatrist. In the meantime, don't bear weight on your foot/use crutches. If you go to an emergency room, they often do not perform MRIs other than brain MRIs, and I believe a more advanced study such as MRI may be indicated or a therapeutic block of the nerve causing pain. READ MORE

  • Can bone spurs be removed without surgery?

While bone spurs cannot be removed without surgery, the pain associated with the spur can be treated. A bone spur on the bottom of the heel, for example, can be a sign that there is excess tension on the plantar fascia and the plantar fascia is actually the area causing pain, not the bone spur itself. Plantar fasciitis is traditionally resolved with non-surgical treatment and removing the bone spur on the heel is largely unnecessary. READ MORE

  • Foot ulcer?

See a wound care specialist or podiatrist if you have not already. Ulceration can quickly turn to infection, which can turn to bone infection, abscess (pus pocket), sepsis (bacterial infection in the blood), or worse. Avoid pressure to the area and ask the doctor to give her an offloading pad to assist. The pain could indicate infection or vascular disease. READ MORE

  • What anesthesia is used for ingrown toenail surgery?

Typically, ingrown toenail surgery in the office is performed with local anesthesia/Lidocaine and sometimes marcaine via a needle to the toe. Some severe ingrown toenails require surgery in the hospital or an ambulatory surgery suite, and they include the same local anesthesia plus sedation, a sleep-like state during which you can move and talk, but you do not remember the surgery. READ MORE

  • Do you need physical therapy after a broken foot?

Bone healing can take 4-8 weeks so avoid weight bearing or walking on that broken bone until it has healed. Depending on the area of the foot physical therapy may be indicated after bone healing has taken place to restore strength and function after weeks of no use however it is often not necessary below the ankle. • I have pus-filled white bumps around my ankle. What could this be?

Bumps in the skin could be caused by many factors including but not limited to bacterial infection, allergic reaction, friction, or even circulation issues. Depending on the diagnosis it could require antibiotics or a referral to another specialist. You can't know for sure without seeing a podiatrist or a dermatologist. READ MORE

  • Why do I have a bruise for 6 months on my foot?

If you cannot think of any outside cause (shoes, activity etc), you may need a biopsy of the area from a podiatrist or dermatologist. "Biopsy" does not always mean "The C word," it could identify another cause for the change in color in your skin or why it isn't healing. READ MORE

  • Can a chiropractor help with dislocation?

You need to see a foot and ankle specialist whether it be a podiatrist or an orthopedist. The physician will guide you through your course of treatment and potentially refer you to a physical therapist after your ankle is in good alignment. READ MORE
