There are three major arteries, which supply blood to the heart.  These arteries are very important to maintaining the proper function of the heart.  Similar to pipes that carry water in a home, blood does not flow properly when there are blockages in these arteries.  These blockages can lead to many problems including chest pain, heart attack, congestive heart failure, and even death.  This is called coronary artery disease. Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in the United States causing more deaths than lung cancer, breast cancer, and AIDS combined.

There are several risk factors for coronary artery disease including age, family history, smoking, high blood pressure (hypertension), diabetes, and high cholesterol.  Although one cannot control all risk factors, prevention and treatment are important to the improvement of this disease. Maintaining a low fat-low cholesterol diet and exercising 3-4 times a week can make all the difference. Talk to your doctor today about what you can do to prevent or manage your heart disease.
