OB-GYN (Obstetrician-Gynecologist) Questions Vaginal Yeast Infection

Can vaginal washes cause yeast infections?

I read a recent article that mentioned vaginal washes could actually cause yeast infections in women since they disturb the natural PH balance of the vaginal environment. Is it true? What's the best way to wash thoroughly?

Douching, as it's called among other things, may disrupt the natural vaginal flora with PH changes to facilitate yeast growth. It is thus advised that women avoid this practice of feminine hygiene.
Yes. May cause an imbalanced in yeast bacteria symbiosis
Any disturbance of the PH can lead to a vaginal infection.
Would only use a soap without dyes or perfumes, like dove unscented.
A douche flushes water up into the vagina, clearing out vaginal secretions. Some women use a douche to "clean" the vagina, but using a douche can disrupt the normal vaginal bacteria and cause infections, so it is not recommended that you use one.

Keeping the perineal area between the vagina and anus clean is important. Good perineal hygiene is necessary by washing that area at least once a day with shower or bath routines.

The vagina is designed to keep itself clean with the help of natural secretions (discharge).

"Vaginal discharge is not 'always a bad sign.' There is a myth that copious clear or white discharge is associated with vaginal infections. Changes in the amount of discharge can be 100% hormonal – in other words, linked to the menstrual cycle, pregnancy or menopause."

Healthy discharge does not have a strong smell (it has a natural odor) or color. You may feel an uncomfortable wetness, but you should not have any itching or soreness around your vagina.Seek medical help if you notice the above.

Generally, good vaginal health is maintained by making sure you're in good general health. This includes a healthy diet and exercise. Normal exercise helps maintain good vaginal function, as walking and running help the pelvic floor to tone up and ensure good general health.

Hope this helps, take care!
There is no need to wash the vagina. Nature maintains the correct ph in the vagina.
Yes, it can. Simply taking regular baths are ok.
The article is correct. There is bacteria and yeast in the vagina at all times in a delicate balance and douching upsets this balance. It is not necessary to wash the inside of the vagina.
It is true, best is to wash your private parts with water thoroughly after defecation.
Vaginal washes do disturb the natural protective acidic oh which may lead to a condition called bacterial vaginosis, so it's possible the in balance of the natural pH can lead to the thrush yeast organisms which are natural habitat all over our bodies including vagina to grow. The best way is to use water to wash.
If you get recurrent thrush you may need to go see your doctor to check you for other conditions that can cause recurrent thrush like diabetes for example. I hope this answers your question
