Surgeon Questions Itching

My surgery site is really itchy. What should I do?

Where the doctors did their incision, I find that it's pretty itchy. I'm not really sure why, but it's also red. Is there anything that I can do?

We call it knitting, it's healing so it feels itchy. Apply triple Abx ointment to area TID.
Normal, very normal. Try a skin moisturizer.

Avoid scratching it. If it’s been over six weeks since surgery, the wound might be dry. OTC moisturizing ointment might help.
Try some Benadryl. If that doesn't work, then call your doctor. When an incision is itchy, most of the time it is getting well. Just be sure you do not put anything on the incision; it can make things worse. I suggest you contact your doctor if you continue to itch.

I wish you well,

Itching is typically a sign of wound healing. When an incision is made, nerves in the skin get cut. Itching is the feeling you get when the nerves heal.

Redness may be worrisome. Sometimes it is just a reaction to the sutures, staples, or glue that is used to close the incision. Other times, it is a sign of infection. If the area of redness is growing, if your wound starts draining, if your pain gets worse, or if you start to have fevers, you should contact your surgeon immediately for evaluation.
