What is Oncology?

Oncology is a branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer. An oncologist provides medical care for a patient diagnosed with cancer. They lead a cancer treatment team of various healthcare professionals, coordinate treatment plans, and prescribe medical treatments.

Gynecologic Cancer is any cancer that starts in a woman's reproductive organs. The five main types of cancer are cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar. Each gynecologic cancer is unique, with different signs and symptoms, risk factors and prevention strategies. A woman’s risk of developing gynecologic cancer increases with age. When found early, treatment is most effective.

Breast Cancer cells typically form a tumor that can be seen on an x-ray or felt as a lump. Breast cancer occurs almost entirely in women, but men can also get breast cancer. There are many different types of breast cancer and common ones include ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and invasive carcinoma. Most women with breast cancer will have some type of surgery to remove the tumor.

Thyroid Cancer occurs in the cells of the thyroid — a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck. Thyroid cancer may not cause any symptoms at first, but signs or symptoms may occur as the tumor gets bigger. A common sign of thyroid cancer is a swelling or lump in the neck. Most people with thyroid cancer undergo surgery to remove the thyroid.
