1 What is Framycetin?

Generic: Framycetin (ophthalmic route)

Framycetin is an antibiotic preparation. This ophthalmic medicine is usually used to treat the infections of eye. Framycetin can only be obtained through a doctor’s prescription.

It is available in two dosage forms:

  • Solution
  • Ointment

2 What to Know Before Using

Before using Framycetin, you must know all about the risks and complications associated with it.

The benefits of a drug should always be weighed against its associated risks. Your doctor will consider these risks before prescribing the drug and will inform you about them.

Following factors should be considered before taking this drug:

  • Allergies: If you have had an allergic reaction to this drug in the past, inform your doctor. You should also tell your healthcare provider if you are allergic to any other drugs or food products.
  • Age specific problems: The data regarding the effects of this medicine specific to the pediatric age group is not yet available. Similarly there are no studies present that give information about the geriatric age group specific side effects of framycetin. So, it is not yet known that whether it has the same side effects for younger people and elderly or different.
  • Drug Interactions: Certain drugs should not be used together because they can interact with each other chemically, which can have a harmful effect. On the other hand certain drugs are allowed to be used together. So, you should tell your doctor about any other medications you are taking. If there is a chance of interaction between those two drugs, the doctor may change the dose or may prescribe a different drug altogether.

Furthermore, certain medications should not be taken with alcohol or tobacco, which may also result in harmful interactions. Ask your doctor about the concurrent use of this drug along with alcohol or tobacco. You should also inform your doctor about any other medical condition you may be suffering from.

3 Proper Usage

If you want to use Framycetin in the form of eye drops, you should follow these instructions:

  • To ensure proper drop control, the bottle is only partially full.
  • Wash your hands before applying the drops. Then lie down and tilt your head backwards. Pull your lower eyelid in the downward direction, by gently pressing it away from the eye. This will create a small space between your eyeball and lower eyelid. Put few drops of medicine into this space. Now release the lower eyelid and close your eye gently. Avoid blinking during this period. Now apply some pressure on the inner corner of your eye with the tip of your finger for 1 minute. This will allow the medicine to absorb in the eye.
  • Use a clean tissue to remove any excess drops on the skin surrounding the eye. Do not touch the eyeball with the tissue.

If you are using the ointment form of framycetin, follow the instructions given below. For patients using the eye ointment form of this medicine:

  • Wash your hands before applying the medicine. Lie down and tilt your head backwards. Pull your lower eyelid away from your eye by gently pressing it downwards with your finger. This will create a small space between your eyeball and eyelid. Apply a thin strip of ointment in this space by squeezing the tube. Usually, 1 cm strip of ointment is recommended unless doctor has advised otherwise. Now, release your lower eyelid and close your eye gently. Keep it closed for 1-2 minutes in order to let it absorb more thouroughly.
  • Avoid contact of the tip of the applicator with any surface in order to keep the medicine germ-free. After using the ointment, clean the tip of the tube with a clean tissue and then tightly close the tube afterwards.
  • In order to eradicate the infection completely, it is important to use this ointment for the full course of treatment. Do not miss any dose.

To avoid adverse effects, this drug should be used exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not overuse or misuse this drug and do not use it longer than the recommended time. Read all the instructions mentioned in the medication guide.

Do not miss any dose. The dose of this drug varies according to the condition of each person. The number of doses per day, the time interval between the doses and the length of time you have to take the medicine depends on your condition individually and all these factors should only be determined by your healthcare provider. Follow each and every instruction of your doctor and also read the label carefully.

Storage: This medicine should be stored at room temperature within a closed container, away from heat, direct light and moisture. Keep this drug out of the reach of children. Do not store expired or outdated medicines or the medicine no longer needed.

4 Precautions to Take

While using Framycetin, there are some precautions you must take.

Contact your doctor if your symptoms have not improved even after taking the full course of treatment. Avoid taking any other medicine unless thoroughly discussed with your doctor. Always ask your doctor before using any prescription, non-prescription or herbal medicine.
