1 What is Lotrisone?

Generic: Betamethasone and Clotrimazole

Lotrisone is a combination of two products used in the treatment of fungus infections, such as ringworm, athlete’s foot, and jock itch.

Betamethasone is a strong corticosteroid that works by decreasing the redness, swelling, and itching of the skin.

Clotrimazole is an azole antifungal that works by preventing the growth of fungus. This product is available in the forms of cream and lotion.

2 What to Know Before Using

Your doctor will inform you of what you need to know before using Lotrisone.

Before the decision to start the treatment with Betamethasone and Clotrimazole is made, it is important that you get informed about the expected beneficial effects, as well as the possible side effects and potential risks. For the decision to be made, the beneficial effects must outweigh the potential risks.

This is a decision that you and your doctor, together will have to make. During the consultations with your doctor, it is essential that you inform your doctor:

  • Allergies – Inform the doctor about any allergic reactions to any kind of medications, prescribed or no prescribed. Also, inform the healthcare professional about any allergic reaction to any specific kind of food, fabric, dye and etc.
  • Pediatric – The use of Lotrisone is not recommended within patients younger than 17 years of age.
  • Geriatric – Proper studies have not shown any age-connected risks and problems when this medication is used within geriatric patients. However, in most cases there is an increased sensitivity within geriatric patients, and because of this it is important this medication to be used with extra caution.
  • Pregnancy – Inform the doctor if you are currently pregnant or if you have any plans about pregnancy in the near future. There are no studies done that would confirm the safety of this medicine to be used during pregnancy. Because of this, it should be used only when the beneficial effects outweigh the potential risks.
  • Breastfeeding – Inform the doctor if you are currently breastfeeding. There are no studies done that would confirm the safety of this medicine to be used within nursing mothers. Also, it is unknown if this product is extracted in the milk, so it is unknown how would it affect the infant. Because of this, it should be used only when the beneficial effects outweigh the potential risks.
  • Drug interactions – Inform the doctor if you are currently using any other medications, prescribed or no prescribed, even vitamins and herbal tea. This is important because certain medications should not be used in a combination with others, because of the possibility that certain interactions could occur. But, sometimes the doctor may decide to treat your condition with certain type of a combination including two or more medications if he or she considers that specific type of combination to prove as beneficial regarding your condition.
  • Other interactions – Certain medications should not be used in a combination with certain type of food, and/or tobacco and/or alcohol. Because of this it is important to get informed if there is a need for you to follow any specific type of diet, and/or discontinue your use of tobacco and/or alcohol.
  • Other medical problems – Inform the doctor about your medical history, other medical problems and conditions from the past or present at the moment. Especially, inform the doctor if there are any of the following conditions present – bacterial infections, skin diseases causing impaired circulation, e.g. stasis dermatitis, tuberculosis, Cushing’s syndrome, diabetes mellitus, hyperglycemia, intracranial hypertension, diaper dermatitis, herpes, vaccinia, varicella, other virus infections on the skin, large sores, or liver failure.

3 Proper Usage

To use Lotrisone properly, you must follow all instructions given by your doctor.

For proper use, follow the directions given by your doctor. This medication must be applied on the skin only. Do not apply it on the face, underarms, groin area, mouth, eyes, nose, or vagina. Wash your hands before and after each treatment. Apply a thin layer of the medication in the affected area. Do not cover the area, unless it is directed by the doctor. Use it regularly to get the most beneficial effects from its use. If you forget to apply it, do it as soon as you remember. Do not double to catch up.

This product is harmful if swallowed. If swallowing is suspected, inform the doctor as soon as possible for further directions. The dose is individual for every patient, prescribed by your doctor and based on your condition and the prognosis of the treatment.

4 Precautions to Take

Before using Lotrisone, there are some precautions you must take.

Visit your doctor at your scheduled appointments so that he or she would be able to track your condition and make any adjustments if needed. These adjustments may refer to the dose – the doctor may decide to increase or decrease the dose, or to the treatment itself – the doctor may decide to discontinue the treatment if there are serious side effects present, or if your condition does not improve.

Inform you doctor about any allergic reactions to any kind of medications, prescribed or no prescribed. This is important because this product may contain inactive substances that could cause interactions to occur.

Inform your doctor if you are currently pregnant or have any plans about pregnancy in the near future. If you are currently pregnant, the doctor may decide not to treat you with this medication because of the lack of studies that would confirm the safety of this medication to be used during pregnancy.

The doctor may advise you to start using a proven form of birth control to help prevent pregnancy during the treatment. Inform the doctor of you are currently breastfeeding.

Extra caution is needed when used within geriatric patients due to the increased sensitivity.

5 Potential Side Effects

Make sure you meet with your doctor in using Lotrisone to avoid unwanted potential side effects.

Along with its needed beneficial effects, there are possible side effects that should be also expected. These side effects do not appear within all patients, also they could be mild or more serious. However, it is essential that you get informed about the potential side effects so that you would be able to notice their appearance and inform the doctor as soon as possible.

Based on the present side effects, the doctor may decide to discontinue the treatment with this product.

  • Common side effects – Dry skin, tingling, burning, or stinging. These are common side effects which are not considered to be serious. But if their presence persists or worsens, inform the doctor as soon as possible.
  • Serious side effects – Acne, extreme hair growth, skin discoloration/ stretch marks, or hair bumps. These are serious side effects which presence should be notified to the doctor right away.

A very serious allergic reaction is not common, but if you notice any of the following symptoms, inform the doctor right away – skin rash, itching/swelling of the hands, feet, face, tongue, trouble breathing, or severe dizziness.
