OB-GYN (Obstetrician-Gynecologist) Questions OBGYN

Extremely long period.

What would cause a period to last for over 20 days and still not go away? It started where I pretty much didn't have a period for about 5 months, then suddenly I got my period Dec 27, 22 and it's only getting worse. And heavier.

Hi
You should see a gynecologist so you can be evaluated. You should get your hormones checked, a pelvic exam and a pelvic ultrasound.
with a regular periods, I recommend a pregnancy test if sexually active within the last five months.
It is possible the steroids are interfering with the normal hormone balance.
You did not mention weight or acne, both of which could be signs of PCOS, which is a common cause of irregular menses,
A pelvic sonogram would help assess polycystic, ovarian syndrome and the endometrium for possible pathology. And could indicate further evaluation with possible endometrial biopsy. If ultrasound and hormone work up or negative, I would recommend oral contraceptives to help regulate distressful menstrual irregularity of menses.
At Grand Rounds, the professors and the Residents agree upon the following:
1) A thorough Gynecology Examination, pregnancy test urine (+ blood test) should be in order.
2) The Medical Lab work -up including the hormonal profile.
3) Your medication could be the source of the abnormal hormonal variation and the weight control goal.
4) If the pregnancy test is negative, a short course of hormonal therapy can be very helpful to resolve the problem
Thank you very much.
Sincerely Yours,
Bich Le, M.D.
There could be many reasons for a prolonged period including, the abnormal build-up of too much endometrial tissue, especially since you did not get a period for 5 months. You need to see a board-certified OBGYN and have proper work which will include a pelvic exam, hormone blood work, and pelvic ultrasound and your OBGYN can get you on a treatment to stop the bleeding while a proper diagnosis is being worked on.
Many things could cause your menstrual cycle to be abnormally long and heavy. This best evaluated in your health care provider's office and not over the internet.
