Cardiac Electrophysiologist Questions Arrhythmia

My mother has an arrhythmia. How will it be monitored?

My mother was diagnosed with an arrhythmia last week and is currently being treated for it in the best way that doctors can. How will they keep it under control and monitored?

Hello, thank you for your question. Typically, event monitors, which are wearable adhesive devices that stick onto the chest can monitor someone's heartbeat for up to 1 month. This is usually plenty of time to assess whether current treatment is working. If the arrhythmia cannot be treated with medications, ablation therapy by a cardiac electrophysiologist would likely help, depending on the arrhythmia she is experiencing. There are different heart arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms). For instance, atrial fibrillation (Afib), the most common arrhythmia in adults, can be treated with specific medications or a procedure called catheter ablation. To diagnose and monitor the arrhythmias like Afib, we can use wearable heart monitors (Holter or cardiac telemetry monitors), or use a tiny sensor that is placed under the skin on the chest wall (Implantable Loop Recorder). We also can monitor the patient's heart rhythm and symptoms by using the consumer EKG devices such as Apple watch. Omron or Kardia (AliveCore).
There are different ways for monitoring arrhythmia (which is a very generic name for abnormal rhythm). Intermittent monitors like a 24/48 H Holters, 30-day event monitors, or implantable long-term monitors like the Medtronic Linq or Biotronic BioMonitor-II.
