Nephrologist (Kidney Specialist) Questions Kidney Stones

Why was I referred to a nephrologist?

After having 3 instances of kidney stones, my urologist has referred me to a nephrologist. What do they do? How will this experience be different from a urologist?

To study your kidney stone disease and treat you to stop their formation
Nephrologist will be doing studies to find out the reasons why you are having kidney stones by doing blood work, one or two 24-hour collection. By finding out the reasons for kidney stones, you can be treated. Urologist usually takes care of stones by removing them, but nephrologists help you from getting further stones. There are several kinds of kidney stones and several reasons for having kidney stones, so the nephrologist will be doing "metabolic workup for stone formation".

Hope this will help you.
Some Nephrologists take on the role of kidney stone prevention. Checking 24 hour urinalyses and making dietary and medicine recommendations to prevent future stones
Absolutely!
We assess the kind of stones based on blood and urine tests and can treat with medications and diet modifications to prevent stones from firming
Nephrologists do metabolic profile by doing 24 hour urine collection to see what kind of kidney stone your kidney is making and can advise to modify your diet and can prescribe medication to reduce the risk of recurrent stone formation.
Both nephrologists and urologists treat diseases of the kidney. Typically the nephrologists deals with the medical management of kidney disease and the urologist deals with the surgical management. Many urologists are comfortable managing and preventing stone disease but some prefer to send to nephrologist for this treatment.

You were referred because your urologist wants you to undergo testing to see if there is any preventive measures you can do to prevent further stones from forming. Our nephrology colleagues are the medical doctors of the kidney and urologists are the surgeons. There can be dietary, fluid and metabolic issues that they can treat and prevent further stone formation 90% of the time, if you follow the recommendations.

A nephrologist is a medical doctor who specializes in dealing with non surgical intrinsic problems with the kidney. Nephrologists can help make sure your blood pressure, electrolytes, and kidney function are optimized while also helping to lower your risk of kidney stones.
The nephrologist will evaluate you and recommend changes in diet and/or medications to help reduce the chances of a future kidney stone.
A Urologist is a surgeon and can take out stones.
But a nephrologist will help to diagnose the risks of renal stone and can help to avoid making new stones.

Kidney stones are mostly preventable, I will work with you to find out what are the risk factors you might have that makes you prone to form kidney stones and then we should work together on eliminating these factors and prevent kidney stones from recurring again.
If your kidney function deteriorates, nephrologist will be consulted, while your urologist treats your renal calculi.
Often, the nephrologist will do testing to determine the types of stones
you are passing and make suggestions to help avoid formation of further
stones. Some urologists will do this workup also but some defer the
evaluation of the type of stones formed and the treatment to the
nephrologist. I hope this information helps you.
