Naturopathic Physician Questions Insomnia

Can natural remedies treat insomnia?

I'm 25 and have been dealing with insomnia for half a year now. I've tried everything and can't seem to find a solution. Are there any natural remedies that can help me fight insomnia?

Most definitely. As a naturopathic physician, I always like to identify and treat the root cause - what is really causing insomnia in the first place. A correct diagnosis leads to the correct treatment plan. With my patients, I always work with them on general sleep hygiene but also tap into many different naturopathic remedies, such as botanicals/herbs, homeopathy, and addressing underlying health conditions that may be contributing to insomnia. The short answer is yes. The natural remedies are really tailored to the patient and their unique health needs.
Sleep is complicated and supplements often depend on if you're having trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or both.
There are natural supplements that can help support the neural pathways for sleep (such as melatonin, 5-HTP, l-theanine, GABA, etc.) and the correct formula depends on your sleep needs as well as the underlying issues that could be contributing to sleep disturbance.
I recommend checking in with your PCP and making sure there isn't an underlying cause for why you are having trouble with sleep (thyroid, hormones, anxiety/depression, stress, sleep apnea, etc.) since treating the cause will often help resolve any issues.
Finding the cause of insomnia is crucial and yes, you can treat with natural remedies.
Yes, there are many natural remedies that can be used to treat insomnia. Homeopathy especially works well for it. But the long term solution is to address the cause.
Hi there. I'm so sorry to hear about your insomnia troubles. If your insomnia has not improved with trying conventional or common treatments, then it may be that the true cause of the insomnia is not being addressed or maybe not discovered yet. There are several natural remedies to reverse your insomnia and to know which one or ones are right for you, I'd need to ask several questions. Sleep. Ah, yes. There are many remedies to aid in insomnia. However, I look at the bigger picture of gut health, stress, use of screen time, food intake, and other factors which can contribute to insomnia. In addition, there are different types of insomnia (for example: no trouble falling asleep, trouble staying asleep; trouble falling asleep, okay once asleep; waking too early, waking
often) and each requires a different approach. Hope this helps and sweet dreams!

There are a lot of reasons for insomnia. I would recommend visiting with a Naturopathic doctor that could help you find out the reason for your insomnia and correct it at the root cause. Good luck.
Yes there are many essential oils that can treat your sleeping. Peppermint would be just one on that list
There are several reasons that you may have insomnia. Differentiation needs to be made between difficulty going to sleep vs. staying asleep. The issues may be lack of a neurotransmitter called gaba, to anxiety issues treated best with l-theanine, to low serotonin. Identifying which one of the pathways is not functioning properly is the best approach to correcting insomnia. If you are waking up after going to sleep and that is more of the issue, then it is important to look at things like liver congestion and possibly a parasitic pattern.
Yes. Melatonin, Passion Flower from the Caribbean, California Poppy, Kava, Chamomile Tea, Benadryl.
I have helped patients with insomnia through natural routes. So there are natural remedies/therapies/supplements that can help. However, it's not just the insomnia that was addressed. Finding out why you are having insomnia would be a place to start. But, getting labs to assess the rest of your health can also help as everything is interconnected.
There are natural treatments that can help, it is first good to get the cause…too much caffeine, hot, hormone changes, stress, etc. Then once that is established remedies to help can be supportive and work!
