Orthopaedic Surgery Questions Scoliosis

Do you need to have corrective surgery for scoliosis?

My doctor has diagnosed me with scoliosis but doesn't seem to be very concerned about it. Right now, I'm using a brace to help straighten my spine, but would I need to have corrective surgery?

Only if your curve exceeds 45 deg.
Corrective surgery is only required if the curvature worsens despite bracing. Patients are usually followed every 4-6 months while they are growing to check for progression of the curve.
Good luck.
Need for correction surgery depends on the degree of the curvature and the age of the patient.

Thanks for your question. It really depends upon symptoms, severity of the curve, etiology of the curve, patient’s age and other prognostic factors for scoliosis. In the absence of significant pain or limitation, adults with moderate scoliosis of lumbar or even thiraco-lumbar region even up io 15-20 degrees so not need surgery. Indon’t Know your age but a corset may help. Having said that, scoliosis is not my central area of expertise.
All the best,
