Dentist Questions Dental Crown

How long after a crown is cemented can I eat?

I'm going to have a dental crown on my tooth next week, and I'm worried about when I can eat after it's implanted in. How long after a crown is put in can I eat?

Most modern cements set up within 10 minutes time. Your provider should detail post operative instructions specific to the cement that they use. Congratulations on your new crown. You’re officially royalty :)
It depends on the type of material your dentist uses, but it should only be a short time until the cement is fully set. You should be able to leave the office and eat. But make sure you ask your dentist at the time because different materials have different set times.
It depends on the type of crown, cement used and if you had to get numb for the crown seating/delivery. But, generally, 1 hour. Make sure and ask your dentist.
1 hr
You can eat usually within 1 hour
If it's just a crown cemented on a normal tooth usually it's fine with in an hour with modern cements. If you had an implant done with a crown placed at the same appointment then you may have to take care not to put too much force on it for sometime. You need to check with the doctor that placed it. It depends on how solid the bone is that the implant was placed in.
Do not eat sticky or hard foods for a day, otherwise, no restrictions are necessary. But you need to ask the dentist doing your crown to answer that for you.
Good news! You can eat right away or at least wait until you get out of the office!
Once the crown is cemented in the office and light cured, this is the hardest the crown will ever be. You are safe to eat right away. It is however, recommended to give it some time before eating chewy things on that side of the mouth just to be on the side of caution.
Within an hour
The usual for a crown being cemented is that you can eat most foods after an hour. You can also brush normally after an hour. With the cements that I use, you will want to treat the tooth like a temporary crown for the first 24 hours, meaning avoiding chewy and sticky foods and if you floss, floss toward your gums then pull out to the side, do not pull back toward the biting surface until that same time the next day. As a side note, my cements say you can drink anything you like after 15 minutes, however my patients tell me that it is cement flavored for 45 minutes. So just giving you the flavor warning that you might not want your favorite flavored beverage until after that time.
Most times you can eat after 30-60 minutes. Try to avoid chewing gum or "sticky" foods like fudge, caramel, jelly beans, etc., for a few weeks.
Generally you can eat after about an hour. Talk to your dentist. Different cements have different setting times.
When cementing a dental crown, you need time to allow the cement to harden. Usually it depends on what cement is being used. You may be told to keep liquids or foods out of your mouth for about an hour. Hot or cold liquids/ and or food will prevent the cement from hardening, Listem to your doctor. Crowns are placed on natural teeth or on an implant that has been placed in your gum and and is prepared to have a crown. Implants can have a cemented or a crown that has to be screwed in place. The time it takes for cement to harden can be affected by heat and cold. Usually it is an hour.
