How long should I not eat before my procedure?

I have to get a root canal done next week, for which I'm getting local anesthesia for. I'm well aware that I'm not supposed to eat before my procedure, but how many hours before my procedure should I not eat?

You can eat before the procedure no problems at all.
If you are only having local anesthetic, which should be adequate, eating before the visit should not be a concern.
