What is the best breakfast for a diabetic to eat?

I am a 43 year old male with diabetes type 2. I want to change my diet. What is the best breakfast for a diabetic to eat?

Dear Patient,

I like my patients to consider counting carbs at meals to improve diabetic control; breakfast is generally cereal, milk and fruit adding up to about 40 to 50 grams of carbs, which could include 1/2 banana, 1/2 bowl of cereal and glass of milk. I also discuss eggs, but remind everyone that the yolk of egg contains 300 mg cholesterol and like monitoring that dependent on blood levels of cholesterol, egg whites are acceptable to me.

A veggie-filled egg white omelet. Or if you can’t eat eggs, then substitute tofu chunks...and still lots of veggies... or 8oz of plain Greek yogurt with a couple of blueberries and almond slices.

As a diabetic it's best to minimize blood sugar spikes. Choose a breakfast with healthy fat and protein. Pasture-raised eggs cooked in grass-fed butter with a few vegetables is a great choice. You could also eat whole milk Greek yogurt with nuts. Avoid cereals but, if you must, choose steel cut oatmeal with added fat, such as coconut oil or nut butter.
In regards to diabetes, it is important to understand the cause of diabetes so that you can eliminate it all together by how you combine the foods you eat.
There IS no BEST breakfast. There are some things to avoid, however. Avoid sugary cereals. Rather, eat a high fiber cereal & add an artificial sweetener rather than sugar. There should be protein in the breakfast. Protein can be found in milk, eggs, breakfast meats, etc. Avoid sugary juices. Coffee is okay, & new data indicates it may be beneficial. Toast is okay, but don't add jelly or jam. The most important thing is to follow St. Paul's advice: "Be temperate in all things." And see a dietician who can develop a meal plan for you.
Old fashion oat meal!
