What should my child know before getting braces?

My 9-year-old son is about to get braces. He doesn't like having a gap between his front teeth. What should my child know before getting braces?

I recommend going to the AAO website for info about the braces experience.
Braces tend to be more uncomfortable than children expect. There is a force required to move the teeth through the bone and this can be painful or take getting used to. There can also be a change in a child's diet. Orthodontists usually provide a list of foods that kids commonly eat as they can cause the brackets to pop off the teeth or get stuck in the braces. Finally, he should know the importance of excellent oral hygiene. Braces can result in cavities or gum disease if the teeth are cared for very well.

Your child needs to know that braces are a food trap and that tooth and brace brushing, along with daily flossing, is going to be very important. Brushing after every meal will be very important. Also, you may want to get an electric tooth brush and a water pik to aid in the brushing and flossing. Also, braces today are much more comfortable than they were 30 years ago. However, tooth movement, may still cause some discomfort, so be prepared to take some pain medication, advil or tylenol or a combo of the two. Also, use wax to help your lips and cheeks to get used to the braces.
Good luck! You have made a great decision to change the life of your child with a beautiful smile!
