Dr. Seyoum, a board-certified endocrinologist, serves as the Medical Director of Diabetes Programs at the Diabetes Clinic at Wayne State University Physician Group (WSUPG) in Detroit, Michigan. 

Located at University Health Center, the Diabetes Clinic at WSUPG consists of endocrinologists who have the expertise and specialize in the treatment and management of diabetes and metabolic diseases. They provide clinical services for endocrine/hormone-related conditions including diabetes (the body fails to process sugar correctly), hypertension (high blood pressure), thyroid disease, osteoporosis (thinning or loss of bone tissue over time), and pituitary disease.

Alongside his clinical role, Dr. Seyoum serves as an Associate Professor of Medicine & Interim Chief of the Division of Endocrinology at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. The clinical and academic offices are located at the University Health Center within the Detroit Medical Center.

A 1987 graduate of Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia, Dr. Seyoum went on to complete his residency in internal medicine at the same educational venue in 1992. Upon relocating to the United States, he completed his residency in internal medicine at New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn in 2003, followed by his fellowship in endocrinology within the Division of Endocrinology at Wayne State University in 2006. He also holds a Master of Public Health degree in Community Medicine from Wayne State University. 

Among the doctor’s professional experience, he served as a general practitioner/assistant lecturer at Jima Institute of Health Sciences in Jima, Ethiopia from 1987 until 1989. He also served as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Addis Ababa University from 1992 until 1999, and as Head of the Endocrine/Diabetes Unit at Addis Ababa University from 1996 until 1999.

In order to stay up to date in his field, Dr. Seyoum remains a member of several professional organizations, including the American Diabetes Association, the Endocrine Society, the International Diabetes Federation, the Pan African Diabetes Study Group, the National Lipid Association, and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. 

Additionally, he is board-certified in internal medicine and endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism by the American Board of Internal Medicine, a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. 

Endocrinology is a branch of biology and medicine dealing with the endocrine system, its diseases, and its specific secretions known as hormones. Endocrinologists have the training to diagnose and treat hormone imbalances and problems by helping to restore the normal balance of hormones in the body. The common diseases and disorders of the endocrine system that endocrinologists deal with include diabetes mellitus, as well as adrenal, pituitary, and thyroid disorders, among others. 

Recognized for his expertise in the field of endocrinology, Dr. Seyoum is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including Third World Medical Foundation awards for Excellence in Research (1993), International Diabetes Federation Educational Grant Award for Clinical Research on Hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus (1999), and Preceptorship Award from the Endocrine Foundation for Training in Advanced Lipidology at Duke University (2005), among many others. 

In addition to English, he speaks Amharic and Tigrigna.
