In the meanwhile, keep your teeth immaculately clean, flossing and brushing as directed. Running hot water over your brush can soften the bristles if your tissue is tender. Warm salt water rinses not only feel good but can also facilitate healing.

Unfortunately, there are no home remedies for toothaches especially if they are caused by deep decay, infection, fractures, or other pathology. You need to see a dentist find out the source of the pain. It can be as simple as a tooth that is hitting too hard in your bite and needs a minor adjustment. Swelling can arise from infection, post-operative inflammation, or procedural trauma to the tissue. Postoperative pain can arise from these and other causes. If you have swelling in your gum tissue that was not there before the root canal that persists, throbs, or enlarges, you need to let your dentist know immediately. That being said, very warm salt water rinses using 1 teaspoon of salt dissolved in one cup of water every few hours works wonders in easing discomfort and reducing minor swelling. If your medical condition allows, 400 mg ibuprofen every 4 hours PLUS acetaminophen is a powerful combination for dental pain. NEVER exceed the daily limits of acetaminophen. Do not exceed the daily limits on the bottle for the ibuprofen unless directed by your dentist. As I previously stated, if the swelling does not resolve in a few days or is worsening, you need to always communicate that with the treating dentist.

Current research shows that it is very unlikely that a cavity will form under an intact sealant. In fact, it is unlikely that even small areas of decay will progress under intact sealants or restorations. That being said, sealants need to be checked regularly to ensure that they remain intact and well bonded to healthy tooth structure.
