What is General Surgery?
General Surgery is a branch of medicine that requires knowledge of and treatment for the preoperative, operative, and postoperative management of patients with a broad spectrum of diseases. General surgeons typically treat appendicitis, diverticulitis, and anorectal disorders.
Appendicitis occurs when there is a blockage inside of the appendix. The main symptom is pain in the abdomen, often on the right side. It is usually sudden and gets worse over time. Appendicitis is a medical emergency and treatment usually involves removing the appendix.
Diverticulitis is when pockets called diverticula form in the walls of your digestive tract. The inner layer of your intestine pushes through weak spots in the outer lining. The most common symptom is abdominal pain, usually on the left side. Treatment may include antibiotics, pain relievers, and a liquid diet.
Anorectal Disorders are a group of medical disorders that occur at the junction of the anal canal in the rectum. Anorectal disorders typically are diarrhea, hemorrhoids, abscesses, fistula, fissures, anal itching, and rectal prolapse. These conditions can often be cured through prompt treatment and lifestyle changes
