The answer to that question all depends on the severity of the tooth break. If it is just a small fracture then the tooth can be in not treated for quite some time but it’s recommended that it is repaired before more damage or other issues occur. If the tooth fracture is quite large and approaching the nerve tissue that is a more severe issue. That tooth should be treated immediately or you can expect to have a severe pain, root canal and possible future extraction. If the tooth is fractured quite severely extraction may be your only option. So the best way to figure this out is to of course visit your dentist have them take an x-ray and have a good discussion with them. Without an x-ray and exam this question is almost impossible to answer for you

I'm not sure there is a correlation. Cavities are caused by bacteria and a food source for the bacteria. Frequently eating increases the acidic environment or your mouth as the bacteria become more active. This increases the risk of dental caries. Brushing removes the bacteria and the acid they produce thereby reducing the risk of cavities. So, diet and oral hygiene contributes a great deal to cavities. High simple carbohydrates like sugar in our diets increases that risk even more. So basically diet, types of food, and oral hygiene all contribute. All of which can be decreased by good oral hygiene.

A crown vs onlay. A crown is full coverage of the tooth tip to gums. A large portion of the top and sides of the tooth are removed. Usually used when a large portion of the tooth is fractured, decayed or destroyed or when a root canal has been performed. An onlay is a more conservative way to replace some or all of the top portion of a tooth when a filling is not appropriate. It does not replace all surfaces of the tooth. It is a great way to keep the tooth without cutting large portions of it way and just replacing the portion that is affected.
