Dentist Questions Dental Crown

How do you know when a crown needs to be replaced?

I'm 42, and I have had a dental crown on my tooth for 6 years already. How would I know if a dental crown needs to be replaced?

It needs to be replaced only if you have any problems with it - cavity under it, fractured crown. If you don't, just use it and floss daily.
Need to take X-rays and evaluate margin and aesthetic and occlusion.
Crowns may need to be replaced if there is decay under the crown. Crowns may also need to be changed if portions of the porcelain have fractured off, making the restoration look unattractive or not as strong. In some cases, crowns may break apart and need to be replaced because they are fractured. Just because a crown is 6 years old does not necessarily mean it needs to be replaced. Your dentist should be able to advise you if you need your crown replaced and the reason for this.
Crowns last for years and years. The best way to know if it needs replacing is to ask your dentist. Regular checks-ups are in place to monitor all restorations and oral health. Radiographs and oral exams can evaluate the heath of the crown.

If there is decay below the crown and open margin, that is the most common reason to redo the crown. You should have it checked.
Thanks.
Unless the crown breaks, often you would not know if your crown needs replacement. That is why it is important to see your dentist on a regular basis so that the integrity of the crown can be evaluated, and if decay (a cavity) starts under the crown, it can be found in the early stages.
