The first thing to rule out is an underlying medical condition that maybe causing his loss of appetite. Once that has been ruled out a through look at his medications would help. Some medications cause dry mouth and metallic taste that can change the taste of food and cause loss of appetite. If loss of appetite is not due to a medical condition or medication side effect some other causes include : Dehydration, lack of exercise or stimulation, inability to chew or swallow food properly, taking medication at wrong times or sensitivity to smells. Taste buds and sense of smell changes as a person ages and can affect appetite as well.
Hope this helps.

There are a few things that you can do to take part in your mom's care to ensure that she is doing okay.
1. Get a camera system like Nest or other competitor and put one in her home. Let her know that you can see what she is doing with the camera and keep a set of eyes on her in case she needs help. This way you can always keep an eye on her with your phone from anywhere.
2. Face time call or visit her on a regular basis to see how she is doing and go over her daily schedule with regard to eating and taking medications.
3. Accompany her to a doctor visit to ensure that she understands and remembers all aspects of her care.
4. Ask your doctor about home health if she requires some assistance at home. This could be very helpful because there would be another set of eyes to watch your mom.

Thanks for the question. Memory loss may be due to a variety of causes and there are plenty of things that can be done:
1. He should first see his primary care doctor or geriatrician to evaluate his overall cognitive ability by doing simple bedside tests. This should be accompanied by performing basic blood work to evaluate for things like dehydration and thyroid abnormalities. Medications could also be a cause for impaired memory so these should be evaluated as well.
2. Once reversible causes of memory loss are evaluated for by his primary care doctor or geriatrician he should consider evaluation for primary memory disorders like mild cognitive impairment and dementia. There are many types of dementia and testing may need to be done to further evaluate.
3. Once evaluation and diagnostics are done the appropriate treatment plan can be determined. There are some memory medications that can be used if he is found to have a significant memory issue.
