Massage therapy is considered a part of integrative medicine.
Massage Therapy is a type of treatment administered by a skillfully trained licensed massage therapist, or other professional in the medical field.
Massage therapy is the manipulation of soft tissue techniques to the body, which includes applying fixed pressure, using primarily the hands, soft fists, and forearms, and utilizing techniques (kneading and compression) for the benefit of the musculoskeletal, circulatory-lymphatic, nervous, and other systems of the body.
Before receiving therapy, a discussion should be had with your therapist to learn more about you. You know your body best. It is important to express if you are experiencing muscle pain or knots, as well as communicate any prior injuries, surgeries, or other conditions, such as active cancer. Please inform your therapist of any medications you are taking.
Various conditions, such as low back or upper neck pain, require specific types of massages. Your therapist should perform an assessment first, which includes postural, and gait analysis. Your therapist should always pay careful attention to your specific concerns and needs.
Although massage therapy is a powerful tool with health benefits, it does not replace the necessity of medical care or regular health care visits. In cases where massage therapy would not be appropriate, I recommend alternative medical care, such as a physician, physical therapist, chiropractor, or another qualified practitioner.
