How Resistance Training Could Help with Multiple Sclerosis

Tips for an effective MS workout

  • Stretching – Stretching can help improve balance, flexibility, and range of motion. For instance, yoga is a great relaxation technique that is good for both the mind and the body.
  • Water aerobics – Water aerobics is a great physical activity that can help ease your MS symptoms. “Use water weights, wet belts, noodles, and other pool equipment to get an effective cardio workout,” said Amy Rauworth, a registered clinical exercise physiologist.
  • Resistance training – Resistance training for MS by using low weights and high repetitions can strengthen your muscles and improve your balance, thus alleviating muscle weakness and numbness. “Work with a physical therapist or trainer to develop a resistance training regimen that is best suited to your fitness level, abilities, and goals,” said Nancy L. Sicotte, director of the Multiple Sclerosis Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
